Introducing Shatuo Temple

Shatuo Temple is also known as "Shatuo Temple" and "Gadan Temple". It is called "Zaxi Qun Kelin" in Tibetan, which means "Auspicious Dharma Wheel Continent".

The current site is located in Heitugen, on the western shore of Qinghai Lake, 46 kilometers southwest of the county seat, in Danlonggou on the banks of the Buha River in present-day Quanji Township. The temple's original site was in Niannaisoma, 6 kilometers southwest of present-day Quanji Township. The temple was built on a ridge rising between the Quanji and Ashihan Rivers, extending along the terrain to the shore of Qinghai Lake.

The temple, founded in 1665, belongs to the Nyingma school. Legend has it that there was a "Obo" temple dedicated to the mountain deity long ago. In 1653, the fifth Dalai Lama, Lobsang Gyatso, visited Beijing to meet the Shunzhi Emperor. On his way back to Tibet, he passed through Qinghai Lake and held a religious ceremony here to pray for the protection of the sea deity.

All the scripture halls and Buddhist temples have Buddhist murals on their interior and exterior walls, as well as exquisitely crafted embroidered images on the pillar covers, which look quite spectacular against the backdrop of the Qinghai Lake scenery.
