Huangyuan Gorge is located in Huangyuan County, Xining City, historically known as "Danggar". It is located on the north bank of the Yellow River, east of Qinghai Lake, and the source of Huangshui River. It is surrounded by Datong Mountain, Riyue Mountain, and Huashi Mountain, which are branches of Qilian Mountain. The altitude is between 2,470 meters and 4,898 meters, with a relative height difference of 2,428 meters.

The Huangshui River runs diagonally from northwest to southeast through the northern part of the county. Its largest tributary, the Yaoshui River, flows north from the south. These two rivers divide the Huangyuan River into a narrow, T-shaped valley basin, forming the "Three Gorges"—Xishi Gorge, Bayan Gorge, and Yaoshui Gorge. The entire gorge is a picturesque landscape of towering mountains, jagged rocks, and surging rivers.

Since ancient times, Huangyuan Gorge has been an important passage from the inland to the western pastoral areas and Tibet. It is a fortress on the ancient Tang-Tibet Road and the Southern Silk Road.
