Huangyuan City God Temple is located on the north side of the central cross of Huangyuan County, Xining City, Qinghai Province. It was built in 1776 AD (the 41st year of Emperor Qianlong's reign in the Qing Dynasty) and has a history of more than 200 years. It is the most complete ancient building from the Qing Dynasty in Huangyuan County and one of the most complete city god temples in Northwest China.
The City God Temple, facing south, features three halls and two courtyards, a brick and wood structure covering 6,000 square meters. Its simple and elegant architecture, grandeur, and splendor are renowned far and wide, attracting numerous visitors and a vibrant incense market during major festivals, including the first and fifteenth day of the lunar month.
Huangyuan City God Temple has weathered many vicissitudes, experiencing rise and fall. It underwent several renovations during the Jiaqing and Xuantong reigns, and underwent a major renovation after the reform and opening-up policy, gradually reaching its current size. The majestic mountain gate, built atop six steps, is surrounded by two east and west railings, each adorned with carved columns of varying sizes, which complement the gate and enhance its grandeur. Opposite the gate, a 6.6-meter-high and 10-meter-wide blue brick screen wall is engraved with floral and cloud patterns, a masterpiece of Qing Dynasty brick carving.
