Qinghai University, formerly known as Qinghai Institute of Technology, was founded in 1958. In November 1960, Qinghai Institute of Technology merged with Qinghai Agricultural and Animal Husbandry College, Qinghai Medical College, and Qinghai College of Finance and Economics to form Qinghai University. Qinghai University was abolished during the early years of the Cultural Revolution. In 1971, it was restored as Qinghai Institute of Technology and Agriculture, offering both engineering and agricultural disciplines. In 1988, it was renamed Qinghai University. In October 1997, Qinghai College of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine was incorporated.
