Qinghai University, formerly known as Qinghai Institute of Technology, was founded in 1958. In November 1960, Qinghai Institute of Technology merged with Qinghai Agricultural and Animal Husbandry College, Qinghai Medical College, and Qinghai College of Finance and Economics to form Qinghai University. Qinghai University was abolished during the early years of the Cultural Revolution. In 1971, it was restored as Qinghai Institute of Technology and Agriculture, offering both engineering and agricultural disciplines. In 1988, it was renamed Qinghai University. In October 1997, Qinghai College of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine was incorporated. In January 2001, the Qinghai Academy of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences, Qinghai Academy of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Sciences, and Qinghai Vocational and Technical College of Finance and Economics were fully integrated into the university. In 2004, Qinghai Medical College was incorporated to form the new Qinghai University.

As of April 2018, the school covers an area of ​​more than 3,000 acres; it has 5 doctoral degree authorization points, 57 master's degree authorization points, 40 master's professional degree authorization fields, and 69 undergraduate majors; there are 15 colleges and 26 departments (divisions); there are 4,615 faculty and staff, and more than 27,000 students.
