Mengding Dongjing Buddhist Temple, located in Dongjing Village, Mengding Town, a national-level border crossing in Gengma Dai and Wa Autonomous County, is a nationally protected cultural relic. Its architecture and furnishings reflect the Southern Buddhist tradition of Theravada Buddhism. Within the main hall are a golden statue of Sakyamuni Buddha and 22 sleeping Maitreya Buddhas, each with a unique appearance. The temple is renowned throughout Southeast Asia for its burial of Sakyamuni's relics.
According to the history of Dongjing Buddhist Temple, after the Buddha's death, his body was cremated and his bones, known as his "sarira," were found. These bones were divided into eight parts and spread throughout the country, endowed with the power of transcending public virtue, to liberate all living beings. One part of the "sarira" was brought to Mengding and buried at Dongjing Buddhist Temple.
During the reconstruction of the pagoda in 1994, 69 Buddha statues, jewelry, bronze statues, and small pagodas were excavated. Also unearthed were two bronze inscriptions that recorded the temple's possession of sacred relics. Among them was a crystalline, oval-shaped Buddha bone approximately 3 centimeters long (the "sarira" of Sakyamuni). The discovery of the "sarira" shrouded Dongjing Buddhist Temple in mystery, influencing the entire Southeast Asia. As a result, Dongjing Buddhist Temple became a Buddhist holy place, dedicated to the Buddha's salvation and universal salvation.
The subtropical low-latitude mountain monsoon climate has a small temperature difference between the four seasons, distinct dry and wet seasons, and significant vertical changes. There is no severe cold in winter and no scorching heat in summer. It is suitable for travel in all seasons.
