Introducing Nayun Ancient Town

Nayun Ancient Town, located in the Menglian Dai, Lahu, and Wa Autonomous County of Pu'er City, is the last surviving Dai ancient town in China and has been designated a Dai Historical and Cultural City. With a history spanning over 700 years, Nayun's name means "inner city" in the Dai language. The houses in Nayun are a blend of Dai and Han architectural styles. From ancient times to modern times, Menglian was ruled by 28 chieftains for a total of 660 years. As these chieftains continued to rule, Nayun Ancient Town gradually expanded and developed, becoming the political, economic, cultural, and religious center for the Xuanfusi's administrative area (including Menglian, Lancang, and Ximeng) encompassing hundreds of miles.

Nayun Ancient Town is a sacred place for the Dai people of Southeast Asia, as it served as the headquarters of the Menglian Xuanfu Office, the chieftain's yamen for generations. Nayun consists of three cities and two towns: the Upper, Middle, and Lower City, and Mangfanggang and Mangfangmao. During the Tusi era, the Upper City was the residence of the chieftain and his servants, the Middle City was home to officials and their families, and the Lower City was home to lower-ranking officials. Mangfanggang and Mangfangmao were the settlements of forestry officials and hunters. The Menglian Xuanfu Office was located at the highest point of the Upper City, and Buddhist temples in the Upper and Middle City also stand majestically nearby. The Menglian Xuanfu Office, called "Hehan" in Dai, means "golden palace." The chieftain's name, "Zhao Hehan," means "king of the golden palace." The Menglian Xuanfu Office burned down during the Qing Dynasty and was rebuilt between 1878 and 1919.
