Dashangfang is located within the Huashan Scenic Area in Huayin City, Weinan City, Shaanxi Province, three kilometers from the Huashan Valley Road. It was the secluded residence of Jiao Daoguang, a Taoist priest on Mount Hua. "Shangfang" is a Taoist term referring to the "heavenly realm." This was once a concentrated area for Taoists. From a distance, the path appears to be hanging from a cliff face. Up close, the only way to reach it is by climbing vines and stepping on rocky cradles. Such a perilous path is accessible only to immortals.
While Dashangfang isn't a must-visit spot for mountain climbing, it does boast numerous scenic spots and legends. Pei Rui's poem, "Shangfang Peak," reads: "Climbing alone to the peak, I find comfort in the height. The air is dark with clouds, and shadows cast over the county, casting shadows. Grasses never die in the snow, and pines sing in the windless air. I will seek the elixir, and return to my quest someday." Ming Dynasty scholar Wang Lu, in his Huashan Chronicles, describes the path up Fangfeng: "Reaching the peak, the peak stands upright, iron ropes dangling from it. Looking at the summit, I can't make out what it is, but the hillside is dotted with trees hanging upside down, creating a secluded atmosphere. On either side are numerous small ridges, reaching from the bottom to the top, each about two inches deep, barely wide enough for the tip of a shoe."
At the end of the chain, on the west side, lies the remains of a stone gate. This is the "Xiyuan Gate," carved by Emperor Xuanzong of Tang in search of his sister, Princess Jinxian. Unable to bear palace life, she and Princess Yuzhen became Taoist nuns and later cultivated themselves on Mount Hua, residing on Baiyun Peak in the "Da Shangfang" area. Legend has it that she achieved immortality, able to ascend to heaven on a crane. Longing for his sister, Emperor Xuanzong ordered craftsmen to carve a gap through the mountain, creating the present-day Xiyuan Gate.
The warm temperate continental monsoon climate offers four distinct seasons and abundant sunshine, making spring, summer, and autumn ideal for travel.
