Chayuan Square, built in 2005 as a tribute to the 20th anniversary of the Pu'er Hani and Yi Autonomous County (now Ning'er County), is a landmark project. Centered around Pu'er tea culture, the square embodies the spirit of "Cultural Ning'er, Elegant Tea Country, and Pu'er Tea Capital." Spanning 82 mu (approximately 1,000 acres), it is the largest urban square in Pu'er.
To the east of the square lies a small circular plaza, nicknamed "Seven-Cake Square" because it resembles a seven-piece tea cake. Stone carvings of various Pu'er tea forms are displayed on the plaza, including melon tea, cake tea, brick tea, square tea, Tuo tea, and mushroom tea. Pu'er tea has been produced as compressed tea since ancient times. This is because compressed tea is easier to weigh and trade, and easier to transport over long distances.
On the left side of the square is the permanent headquarters of the Yunnan Pu'er Tea Association. Directly in front of the association stands the "Origin of Tea, Beginning of the Ancient Tea Horse Road" monument, also known as the "Zero Kilometer Monument of the Ancient Tea Horse Road." It symbolizes the starting point of the Tea Horse Road, from which the five world-famous ancient Tea Horse Roads extended, along which Pu'er tea spread its fragrance far and wide. The monument was jointly erected by the Yunnan Provincial Department of Culture, the Yunnan Provincial Department of Transportation, and the Yunnan Ancient Tea Horse Road Research Association on April 9, 2006, the day the Yunnan Pu'er Tea Association was founded.
Subtropical monsoon climate; Tea Source Square is a symbol of Pu'er tea culture. The cultural charm of Pu'er Tea Capital is concentratedly displayed in the form of group sculptures in this square, making it suitable for travel in all seasons.
