Wugong Mountain, located in Jiangxi Province, China, is a scenic mountain area that blends both cultural and natural attractions. The 21-kilometer hike is known in the outdoor community as "Wugong Mountain in the South, Taibai Mountain in the North," and is considered one of my country's two most famous hiking peaks, along with Taibai Mountain in the Qinling Mountains. In 2009, it was named one of China's top ten undiscovered peaks. Wugong Mountain, a pristine mountain, boasts three breathtaking sights: waterfalls, alpine meadows, and the ancient altar complex at the top of the Golden Summit. Known as "Grassland in the Clouds, an Outdoor Paradise," the 100,000-acre meadow stretches from the summit of a mountain over 1,600 meters high, lush green in spring and summer, golden in autumn, and blanketed in white in winter.
Hidden in seclusion, Wugong Mountain has gradually become a favorite spot for mountaineering enthusiasts and hiking campers. On the way through, you will see lush flowers and leaves, gurgling water, colorful tents on the alpine meadows and the green scenery. Climbing to the highest peak of Wugong Mountain - Jinding, the rolling sea of clouds and the magnificent sunrise will make you feel like you are in a fairyland.
Wugong Mountain has a mild climate with four distinct seasons and an average annual temperature of 14-16°C, making it an ideal summer resort. May to October is the most beautiful time of year for viewing Wugong Mountain.
From late April to early May, the rhododendrons in Fuxing Valley and Hongyan Valley are in full bloom, covering the entire mountain with red, which is very beautiful.
June to August is a good time to escape the summer heat. The alpine meadows are covered with green grass, the mountain waterfalls are full of water, and the scenery is endless.
From September to October, there is a grand tent festival in mid-September. The mountains are covered with maple leaves, and the meadows are dyed into a golden color by the autumn colors, which is particularly dazzling.
In November, some hikers also have a special liking for the ice cap and snow scenery of Wugong Mountain.
Mingyue Mountain
The mountain boasts a variety of breathtaking natural scenery, including dramatic peaks and cliffs, waterfalls and streams, alpine meadows, and seas of clouds and sunrises, as well as numerous Buddhist and Taoist religious buildings. The trail leads to five waterfalls, including the Baoyue Pavilion and the Dipping Moon Pond. The most famous of these is the Yungu Waterfall, boasting the highest drop in the Jiangnan region.
Taipingshan is most famous for its alpine meadow on the top of the mountain, which is rare in the Jiangnan area. If you live in the scenic area, the sunrise at Taipingshan is also a sight not to be missed.
Sheep and Lion Curtain
Part of the Wugong Mountain Scenic Area, it's known as the Little Huangshan Mountain. Yangsimu Scenic Area boasts four unique wonders: peculiar peaks and rocks, ancient trees and flowers, flowing springs and waterfalls, and a sea of clouds and mist. Furthermore, it boasts the rare spectacle of "Buddha's Light." It is a sister peak to Jinding. The mountain's vegetation is well-preserved, and its abundance of exotic and precious trees has earned it praise from numerous celebrities and poets.
If you encounter heavy fog, it will feel like you have stumbled into a fairyland, but be careful because the road is slippery.
Tianmu Mingyue Mountain Hot Spring Resort
With hot springs as its main product, it has a history of more than 800 years. The Wentang geothermal hot springs gush out from the granite 470 meters underground, with a daily output of 7,000 tons of water. The water quality is excellent, and the water temperature is maintained at 68℃-72℃ all year round. It is colorless and odorless, with low mineralization, low sodium, rich in selenium, and high in metasilicic acid content.

Wugong Mountain is one of Jiangxi’s famous natural attractions, renowned for its beautiful landscapes and diverse flora and fauna. It holds cultural significance as a historical site, featuring temples and pavilions that have long been places of worship and retreat for scholars and monks.
Wugong Mountain is located in Pingxiang, Jiangxi Province. The easiest way to get there is by taking a bus or taxi from Pingxiang city center, or from Nanchang city (about 2-3 hours drive). There are no metro lines to the mountain itself, but local buses are available to the base of the mountain.
The mountain is open year-round, but the best time to visit is during spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) when the weather is pleasant for hiking. Summer can be hot, and winter can be cold with occasional snow.
The entrance fee to Wugong Mountain is approximately 80-100 RMB. Tickets can be purchased on-site or through local travel agencies. It is advisable to check online for any discounts or packages.
Booking tickets in advance is not necessary, but it is recommended during peak seasons (holidays or weekends). You can book tickets 1-2 days in advance if you're traveling during busy periods.
A full exploration of Wugong Mountain, including hiking, sightseeing, and visiting temples, can take 1-2 days. If you wish to do more extensive hiking or explore the surrounding areas, allocate up to 3 days.
Guided tours are available in Mandarin, and English-speaking guides may be available for tourists. Audio guides in Mandarin may also be available at major attractions along the trail.
Start by visiting the base of the mountain and take a cable car (if available) or begin your hike to the summit. Explore the temples along the way, and make time for rest at scenic viewpoints. If you are a nature enthusiast, consider visiting the Wugong Mountain Nature Reserve before heading back to the base.
There are no major night visits or light shows at Wugong Mountain. However, some temples may offer evening prayers or cultural performances. It’s best to visit during daylight to enjoy the natural beauty of the mountain.
Wugong Mountain can get crowded during public holidays and weekends. For a more peaceful experience, visit during weekdays or during the off-peak seasons (spring and autumn, excluding holidays).
Facilities are available at the base and along the main hiking routes, including toilets, rest areas, and food stalls. Bring your own water for the hike, as facilities may be sparse on higher trails. There are also small shops selling snacks and souvenirs near the base.
Some parts of Wugong Mountain are challenging for elderly or disabled visitors due to the rugged terrain. However, there are easier paths and cable cars at certain sections, making it more accessible for those with limited mobility. Children can enjoy the mountain’s lower trails and scenic spots.
Mobile payments (WeChat Pay, Alipay) are widely accepted throughout the area. Cash is also accepted at smaller shops, but it’s recommended to use mobile payment for convenience.
There are several local restaurants near the base of Wugong Mountain offering traditional Jiangxi cuisine. Local dishes include rice noodles, pickled vegetables, and various soups. Some smaller cafes offer quick snacks and drinks along hiking trails.
Vegetarian options are available at most restaurants, particularly in Jiangxi cuisine. However, halal food options may be limited in the area. It’s best to check with the restaurant beforehand.
Souvenir shops at the base and along the hiking trails sell items such as local handicrafts, tea, and traditional Jiangxi ceramics. Popular souvenirs also include local herbal products and traditional calligraphy items.
