The Lingao Confucian Temple, located on the banks of the beautiful Wenlan River in Lingao County, was built by imperial decree during the Qingli period of the Northern Song Dynasty and boasts a history of over 900 years. It serves as a public temple where the people of Lingao venerate Confucius and other Confucian sages. Originally known as the Confucian Academy, it merged with the Confucian Temple during the Ming and Qing dynasties, becoming known as the Xuegong, also known as the Confucius Temple, and the Holy Temple. It is the largest, most complete, and oldest surviving ancient architectural complex in Hainan Province.
Located close to the Wenlan River, the sound of the waves adds a touch of grandeur. Its main buildings consist of the Dacheng Hall, the Great East Gate, the East and West Verandas, the Shrine of Famous Officials, and the Shrine of Local Worthies. The Lingxing Gate, Pan Pond, and Jinshui Bridge in front of the Dacheng Gate are famous tourist attractions in Lingao County. On Confucius Memorial Day, people visit to pay homage to the Master, upholding Confucianism and honoring the virtues of the sages.
