Zhongjian Island, located at the southernmost tip of the Xisha Islands in Sansha City, Hainan Province, China, is known to local fishermen as Luodao because of its famed horseshoe snails. The name was changed to Zhongjian Island in commemoration of the Zhongjian warship, which the Chinese government dispatched to reclaim the Xisha Islands in 1946.
Zhongjian Island is a sand island built on a reef, surrounded by high sandbanks. Its elevation is low, averaging only two meters. Typhoons and high tides often submerge large portions of the island, reducing its land area from 1.5 square kilometers to 1.2 square kilometers. Today, the island is covered in coral, shells, and white sand. The water here is clear and the sand is white, significantly superior to the beach and water quality of Yalong Bay in Sanya. However, due to limited reception facilities in the Xisha Islands, only about a hundred guests are accepted annually, averaging a dozen per month, excluding summer typhoons.
