
The Wulingyuan Scenic Area is located in the northwest of Hunan Province in central China. It is composed of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park in Zhangjiajie City, Suoxiyu Nature Reserve in Cili County and Tianzishan Nature Reserve in Sangzhi County. Later, the new Yangjiajie scenic area was discovered, with a total area of 500 square kilometers.
Wulingyuan boasts a rare sandstone peak forest landscape. The scenic area, crisscrossed with ravines, towering peaks, verdant trees, and flocks of birds and animals, has earned it the reputation of "Nature's Labyrinth" and "The World's Most Wonderful Mountain." Its natural beauty and rich, pristine wildness captivate visitors. With a forest coverage rate of 67%, the area is home to over 400 species of wildlife and 850 woody plants. Three first-class protected species are listed, including the leopard, clouded leopard, and yellow-bellied tragopan, as well as 25 second-class protected species, including the giant salamander, macaque, and pangolin. Five national first-class protected plants, including Davidia involucrata, the Bo Le tree, and the southern yew, are also listed, along with 16 second-class protected species, including the white yew, eucommia, and magnolia officinalis.
