Shaxi Town, a township under the jurisdiction of Taicang City, Jiangsu Province, is approximately 15 kilometers from the city center. One of Suzhou's "Top Ten Charming Tourist Towns," Shaxi was originally a market town during the Song and Yuan dynasties. By the Ming and Qing dynasties, a large number of merchants emerged, and waterfront buildings sprang up, transforming the town into a major one in Taicang.
Shaxi Ancient Town is relatively less well-known and cannot be compared with Zhouzhuang, Tongli, Luzhi, Wuzhen, or even Nanxun, but it does restore the original style of the ancient towns in southern Jiangsu. There is no commercial atmosphere, only the authentic life of the ancient towns in southern Jiangsu.
Rich in natural resources, it's known as "Shaxi's First Town among the Eighteen Towns of Southeast China." The town's ancient streets, alleys, bridges, and trees are all well-preserved. The cultural landscape boasts one river, two streets, three bridges (Xinqiao, Anqiao, and Yixinqiao), eight scenic spots, and one island, with Sanli Ancient Street being the best preserved.
Shaxi belongs to the northern subtropical southern humid climate zone, with cold weather with little rain in winter; hot weather in summer; and changeable weather in spring and autumn, with alternating dry and wet weather.
