The Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum is located in the Zhongshan Scenic Area on the southern foot of Purple Mountain in Xuanwu District, Nanjing. It is the mausoleum of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, a great pioneer of modern democratic revolution in China. The overall cemetery is in the shape of a "warning bell" and is known as "the first mausoleum in the history of modern Chinese architecture."
The crescent-shaped square in front is the arc of a bell, while the dome of the mausoleum's coffin resembles the pendulum. The memorial hall, a palace-like structure, features three arched doors and a banner inscribed with the words "Nation, Democracy, and People's Livelihood" above the lintel. A marble statue of Dr. Sun Yat-sen sits within the hall, and the full text of his handwritten "Outline of the National Reconstruction" is engraved on the wall.
The architectural style of Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum is a combination of Chinese and Western styles. The majestic situation of Zhongshan Mountain and the various stele archways, gates, stele pavilions, sacrificial halls and tomb chambers are connected into a large whole through large green spaces and broad steps leading to the sky, which looks very majestic.
The Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum Scenic Area is suitable for visiting in all seasons, but autumn is the most beautiful season, when fiery red, dark green, and golden yellow are interwoven.
