Established as a county in the fifth year of Emperor Gaozu of the Han Dynasty, Zhenyuan boasts a history of over 2,200 years, making it the oldest city on the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau. Zhenyuan's mother river, the Wuyang River, flows through the city in an S-shaped pattern, forming the Bagua diagram. This is why Zhenyuan is also known as the Bagua Ancient Town.

The ancient town is divided into two by the Wuyang River. The north bank, once home to soldiers, is known as the Weicheng (Weicheng), while the south bank, where administrative offices and civilian businesses gather, is known as the Fucheng (Fucheng). The town is comprised of three connected streets (Xinzhong Street, Xinglong Street, and Shuncheng Street), lined with inns, restaurants, and shops.
