The Xihai Grand Canyon is one of the famous canyons within the renowned Huangshan Scenic Area. Its depth, towering cliffs, and sprawling ravines make it a popular destination for tourists and outdoor adventure enthusiasts.
Because the Baiyun River flows through the valley, it's also known as "White Cloud Valley." The valley is surrounded by a series of unusual peaks and rocks, including the nearby Shizhu Peak and Shichuang Peak, the Bodao Peak and Feilaishi Peak to the right and front, the Paiyun Pavilion, Danxia Peak, and Songlin Peak opposite, and the Jiulong Peak and Yunwai Peak to the left and front. The entire route, from Diaoqiao Temple to the foot of Paiyun Pavilion, stretches approximately 15 kilometers. Entering the valley through the gorge, visitors discover lush vegetation, jagged rocks, deep caves, dense stone forests, clear streams, and sheer cliffs. Some call it the "Devil's World," a virgin area within the Huangshan Scenic Area.

The Xihai Grand Canyon is one of the most well-known scenic areas within the Huangshan Mountain range. Known for its dramatic and unique landscapes, it features jagged peaks, winding paths, and natural rock formations. It is an essential part of Huangshan’s cultural and historical heritage, often depicted in ancient Chinese art and literature.
The Xihai Grand Canyon is located in Huangshan, Anhui Province. It can be accessed by taking a bus or taxi to the Huangshan Scenic Area and then using the cable car or walking to the canyon’s entrance. The cable car offers the most direct route to the top, where most of the main attractions are located.
The Xihai Grand Canyon is open year-round, but the best times to visit are during the spring and autumn when the weather is milder. To avoid the crowds, early mornings and weekdays are ideal.
The entrance fee for Huangshan Scenic Area, which includes the Xihai Grand Canyon, is approximately CNY 230-300. Tickets can be purchased both online and at the entrance. Cable car rides are an additional cost and can be bought either in advance or on-site.
It is recommended to book tickets in advance, especially during peak seasons or public holidays. Booking 2-3 days ahead is ideal.
Exploring the Xihai Grand Canyon typically takes about 3-4 hours, depending on how much time you spend hiking, photographing, and relaxing at the viewpoints.
Guided tours are available in Mandarin, and some tours may offer English-language options. Audio guides in multiple languages, including English, are also available for a self-guided experience.
The recommended itinerary is to take the cable car up to the summit, then explore the West Sea Grand Canyon Bridge and nearby viewpoints. Afterward, follow the winding paths through the canyon, taking time to enjoy the natural rock formations and the unique landscape.
Night visits are generally not offered in the Xihai Grand Canyon, but sunrise and sunset viewing tours are popular. These provide unique lighting for photographs and a peaceful experience before the crowds arrive.
The Xihai Grand Canyon can become crowded during holidays and peak seasons, especially during Chinese New Year and the summer months. Visiting during the early morning or on weekdays, particularly in the off-season (autumn or winter), is recommended to avoid the crowds.
The Xihai Grand Canyon is partially accessible to elderly, children, or disabled visitors via the cable car. However, the hiking trails and some areas can be challenging, so they may not be suitable for those with limited mobility.
Mobile payments like Alipay and WeChat Pay are widely accepted throughout the site. Credit cards may also be accepted at most locations. However, it's a good idea to carry some cash for smaller purchases or at remote spots.
There are a few restaurants and cafes located near the base of Huangshan Mountain and the cable car stations. These serve traditional Chinese food, snacks, and drinks for visitors.
Vegetarian food options are available, though they may be limited. Vegan and halal food options are harder to find, but some restaurants may cater to specific dietary needs if requested in advance.
Souvenir shops are available at the cable car stations and major scenic spots. Typical souvenirs include Huangshan tea, traditional Chinese handicrafts, and small pine tree figurines.
Visitors can continue their trip by taking a bus, taxi, or private car from the base of Huangshan to nearby cities or attractions. Huangshan Railway Station is also accessible for train travel.
