Starting with Emperor Yongzheng of the Qing Dynasty, the imperial mausoleum, known as the Western Qing Tombs, was built in Yi County, Hebei Province, where he was buried. To facilitate access to the mausoleum, during the reign of Emperor Qianlong, the imperial court funded the widening and leveling of the existing road, paving sections with stone slabs. This road, then known as the "Jingyi Imperial Road," was also renovated, widened, leveled, and partially paved with stone slabs. The Lutan Ancient Road, a branch of the Jingyi Imperial Road, was also renovated during this period.
Today, most of the Lutan Ancient Road has been covered by National Highway 108 and other roads. The section from Jietai Temple to Shifo Village has been fortunately preserved because National Highway 108 bypasses the mountain to its north. About one kilometer of the original ancient road has been preserved. It goes gently into the mountain and is easy to walk on. It is a main road from Jiucheng to Tanzhe Temple.
