Introducing Petrified Wood National Geopark

Located in Mingxing Town, Shehong County, Suining City, Sichuan Province, the Shehong Petrified Wood National Geopark is the fourth specialized geopark established for the protection and study of petrified wood geological relics, following those in Qitai, Xinjiang, Yanqing, Beijing, and Xinchang, Zhejiang. It is also known as the China Jurassic Exploration Tourist Area.

Petrified wood is a tree that was buried underground for various reasons hundreds of millions of years ago. Chemical substances around the trunk, such as carbon dioxide, iron oxide, and calcium carbonate, entered the tree under the action of groundwater, replacing the original wood components and retaining the shape of the tree. Petrified wood is formed through petrification.

The Petrified Wood Geological Museum is the main building of the Geopark. Its main structure features four giant, upright petrified wood logs emerging from the strata, boasting a unique and innovative design. The museum is divided into two floors, encompassing the Preface Hall, the Shehong Petrified Wood Hall, the Jurassic Ocean Hall, the Shehong Hall, the Earth Hall, and a 4D Cinema. It is a modern museum integrating science, popular science, education, entertainment, and viewing experiences.
