
Qianling Mausoleum, located on Liangshan Mountain, 6 kilometers north of Qianxian County, Xianyang City, Shaanxi Province , is a unique mausoleum in the world where two emperors of different dynasties and a couple of emperors are buried together. It is the burial place of Emperor Gaozong of the Tang Dynasty, Li Zhi, and the only female emperor in Chinese history, Wu Zetian. This mausoleum has not been excavated so far.
Qianling Mausoleum, built on a mountainside, leans against Liangshan Mountain, facing south. Composed of two inner and outer walls, it covers a vast area. While the remains of the outer wall have now vanished, the inner remains remain well-preserved. Qianling Mausoleum is the best-preserved of the " Eighteen Tombs of the Tang Dynasty. " Construction of Qianling Mausoleum coincided with the heyday of the Tang Dynasty, when national power was at its peak. The mausoleum's grand scale and magnificent architecture have earned it the distinction of being " the crowning achievement of all imperial tombs throughout history . "
There are seventeen tombs surrounding Qianling Mausoleum. Among them, the tomb of Princess Yongtai, the tomb of Prince Zhanghuai, and the tomb of Prince Yide have been excavated. A large number of cultural relics have been unearthed, and the murals are of superb artistic quality. A museum has been built, and Qianling Mausoleum has been designated as a national key cultural relic protection unit.
