It was named "Wangkou" because of its location at the confluence of two rivers and the expansive clear waters. The original settlers hoped their descendants would be as long as the river, so the name "Yongchuan" (Yongchuan) was derived from the line "the river is long" from the poem "Book of Songs, Zhou Nan, Han Guang" (Book of Songs). It is listed in the State Council's third batch of China's Famous Historical and Cultural Towns and Villages.
