Introducing South Gate Tower

The Yinchuan South Gate Tower is one of the six gates of Yinchuan's old city and the only one that has survived to this day. Locals customarily refer to it as the "South Gate Tower." Located at the intersection of Nanxun East Street and Zhongshan South Street in Yinchuan's Xingqing District, the tower faces south and opens onto a spacious plaza, serving as a venue for major celebrations and gatherings in Yinchuan.

The South Gate we see today was rebuilt in 1917. It has undergone many renovations since the 1950s. The city walls on the east and west sides of the South Gate Tower were demolished, and the South Gate Square was opened up. Viewing platforms were built on both sides of the gate tower, and many flowers, plants and trees were planted on the north and south sides.

The South Gate, also known locally as the "Little Tiananmen," boasts a north-south arched doorway in the center of the platform. Symmetrical steps flanking the north side of the doorway lead visitors up to the tower. In the center of the tall pedestal stands a two-story pavilion with a hip roof and double eaves, its white walls, red pillars, and green tiles reminiscent of the Tiananmen Gate in Beijing.

For a long time, the Nanmen Square in front of the South Gate was the venue for major celebrations and gatherings in Yinchuan. However, with the rapid development of Yinchuan, the area around the South Gate has become a densely populated area with tall buildings. The once stunning view from the tower is no longer there, and various gatherings and events have moved to the modern People's Square.
