Tianzhong Cave, located mid-slope within Tangpa Stone Forest, is named after a giant bell-shaped stalagmite within the cave. The cave is 828.5 meters long and 38.2 meters deep . The entire cavern is 762-800 meters above sea level.
The cave's cross-section is mostly triangular, with its floor covered in calcium carbonate and silt deposits. These deposits include stalactites, stalagmites, pillars, stone shields, cave beads, and flowstones. Tianzhong Cave developed within limestone and dolomite from the Middle and Upper Carboniferous (approximately 300 million years ago).
The cave was originally formed in the Neogene ( 23.3 million years ago). In its early stages, it served as a channel for the lower reaches of the Huanghou Underground River. It was filled with water. In the middle period, tectonic uplift and river incision caused the cave to become a channel for the underground river in the slope valley of Yuanyang Lake. It then became semi-water-filled. In the later period, with further tectonic uplift and continued river incision, groundwater flowed into the lower layers, turning the cave into a dry cave.
