Monkey Valley, located 13 kilometers south of Longli County , boasts lush vegetation and a diverse plant species. Its natural cover consists of subtropical evergreen oak forests and mixed evergreen and deciduous broadleaf forests, as well as bamboo forests and natural terraced meadow grasslands. Macaques are the most numerous animal in the area , numbering over 500 , hence the name " Monkey Valley . "
Monkey Valley is divided into two major areas: the mountaintop grassland and the valley below. It boasts five scenic areas and six independent scenic spots. Its landforms primarily include terraces and canyons. The terraces, collectively known as the Maruo Terrace, are karst block terraces with a broad, flat surface and gently undulating terrain, mostly between 1,500 and 1,600 meters above sea level . River cutting has further divided the terraces into several smaller platforms, including Malangping, Wuliping, Wangzhaiping, Liangshanping, and Gulangping.
Deep vertical shafts, funnels, and sinkholes often develop on the terraces. The scenic area is home to numerous canyons, each deeply carved into a corridor. This is primarily due to the uplift of the Earth's crust and the intense downcutting of rivers. Between the terraces and canyons, numerous long karst caves often form, containing numerous underground rivers, whose outlets give rise to numerous springs and waterfalls.
