Located at the eastern foot of Dashu Mountain in the western suburbs of Hefei, the Shushan Martyrs Cemetery covers approximately 180,000 square meters and is the largest martyrs' cemetery in Anhui Province. It has been designated a "Key Martyrs' Memorial Building Protection Unit in China" by the State Council and has been designated a patriotic education base in both China and Anhui Province by the Ministry of Civil Affairs and the Anhui Provincial People's Government. It is also a tourist attraction in Hefei.
The Shushan Martyrs Cemetery, formerly the Anhui Martyrs Park, was established in 1955. In March 1976, to highlight its role in patriotic education, a section of the park was separated to form the Hefei Shushan Martyrs Cemetery. The cemetery now comprises the Anhui Revolutionary Martyrs Exhibition Hall, the Dashushan Revolutionary Cemetery, the Memorial Square, and the Martyrs' Monument.
The Anhui Revolutionary Martyrs Memorial Hall, covering 2,642 square meters, showcases the glorious achievements of 190 martyrs representing the province, from the First and Second Civil Revolutionary Wars to the period of socialist construction. Among them are Chen Yannian, son of Chen Duxiu, one of the earliest leaders of the Communist Party of China; Xu Jishen, a distinguished general in the People's Army; Wang Buwen, the first Secretary of the Anhui Provincial Party Committee; and proletarian revolutionaries Luo Binghui and Peng Xuefeng. The hall also houses 450 paintings, handwritten manuscripts by martyrs, calligraphy and paintings by famous figures, inscriptions by leaders, and a list of martyrs from counties across the province.
