Songyuan Park is located in the center of Mohe County. When the county was first built in 1971, a primeval forest was preserved in the center of the county for tourists to enjoy and to purify the urban air. It was designated as Songyuan Park in 1983. It is one of the very few primeval forest parks in the country within an urban area.
The park boasts a total timber volume of 400 cubic meters, primarily consisting of Scots pine and Larix gmelinii, with Scots pine being the most abundant. Because this forest is located on the gentle slopes of a valley, it grows alongside the Dahurian rhododendron, resulting in the so-called Rhododendron-Larch forest. The Dahurian rhododendron, commonly known as Dazixiang, is also known as Manshanhong or Yingshanhong. This plant, found only in high-latitude polar regions, blooms each spring in May. During bloom, the park transforms into a sea of flowers, its lush greenery and vibrant red blossoms filling the air with fragrance, creating a breathtaking spectacle.
