When to arrive for domestic flight st Xmas?

What would be the recommended arrival time at the SL airport before a domestic flight? We usually get to airports two hours in advance but I have never flown at Christmas.

We will be returning a car and checking a bag tomorrow also the day before Christmas Eve. Advice?

Thanks in advance!

Flying during the Christmas holiday season can be noticeably busier than usual, even at airports that are not the largest hubs. Lambert-St. Louis International Airport (STL) will have increased passenger traffic, particularly on the days leading up to Christmas, including the day before Christmas Eve. While two hours is the standard recommendation for domestic flights under normal circumstances, the holiday period changes things.

Here’s a detailed breakdown to help plan your timing:

  • Standard domestic arrival: Normally, arriving 2 hours before departure is sufficient for a domestic flight.
  • Holiday travel impact: During the Christmas period, you can expect longer lines at check-in counters, security checkpoints, and possibly for car rental returns. STL is moderately sized, but delays can add 30–60 minutes or more.
  • Returning a rental car: If you are returning a car before your flight, allocate at least 30–45 minutes for the return process. Car rental return lots can be busier than usual near the holidays, and shuttle transfers to the terminal may take additional time.
  • Checking bags: Expect longer wait times at the airline check-in counters if checking luggage. Some travelers use self-service kiosks, but you may still have to wait for bag drop.

Recommended arrival strategy for STL during the Christmas period:

  • Plan to arrive at the airport at least 3 hours before your domestic flight to allow extra time for check-in, security, and any rental car return delays.
  • If possible, check in online in advance and have your boarding passes ready on your phone or printed to reduce time at the counters.
  • Allow extra time for holiday traffic around the airport. Lambert-St. Louis International is fairly accessible, but roads can be congested during peak holiday travel hours.
  • Use TSA PreCheck or similar expedited security programs if you have access; it can save significant time during busy holiday periods.

Summary: While a two-hour arrival might be enough on a normal day, for Christmas Eve travel, especially when returning a car and checking bags, arriving 3 hours before your domestic flight is safer and will reduce stress. Factor in extra time for traffic, car return, and busy check-in/security lines.
