Jekyll or St.Simons?
My husband and I are wondering which island to visit. We always loved Sanibel Island and visited many times before the hurricane. We also love the vibe at the north end of Anna Maria Island. Are either one of these island similar to those? Thank you!
Both Jekyll Island and St. Simons Island are beautiful destinations located on Georgia’s Golden Isles, each offering a unique experience. While they are somewhat different from Sanibel Island and Anna Maria Island, they do share similarities in terms of charm, nature, and a relaxed, coastal vibe. Here’s a breakdown of both islands to help you decide which one would be the best fit for your getaway:
- Jekyll Island: Jekyll Island is known for its natural beauty, historical charm, and a slower pace of life. It’s less developed than some other islands and has a more laid-back, quiet atmosphere, which may remind you of the peace you enjoyed on Sanibel Island. Jekyll is a state park, so it has a strong emphasis on nature, wildlife, and preservation. The island is home to pristine beaches, bike trails, and historic landmarks like the Jekyll Island Club and the famous Driftwood Beach. If you’re looking for a more nature-focused, tranquil experience with beautiful, uncrowded beaches, Jekyll Island would be an excellent choice. It doesn’t have the same high-rise resorts as Anna Maria, but it’s perfect if you enjoy walking, biking, or exploring historic sites.
- St. Simons Island: St. Simons Island has a slightly more developed feel compared to Jekyll Island, but it still maintains a very relaxed atmosphere. It's often considered more vibrant, with more restaurants, shops, and attractions like the St. Simons Lighthouse and the Pier Village. If you like the vibe of the north end of Anna Maria Island, with its mix of quiet charm and access to amenities, St. Simons might appeal to you. The beaches are lovely, and you can still enjoy a relaxed, family-friendly environment, but St. Simons offers a bit more in terms of dining, shopping, and entertainment options. The island is a great balance between peaceful relaxation and access to activities and local culture.
In terms of similarities to Sanibel and Anna Maria:
- If you loved the natural beauty and seclusion of Sanibel, you might enjoy Jekyll Island more. Jekyll’s quieter atmosphere, beautiful beaches, and emphasis on nature align with what you might have loved about Sanibel before the hurricane.
- If you enjoyed the more bustling, yet still relaxed, vibe of the north end of Anna Maria, St. Simons Island might be a better fit. It offers a similar mix of quiet beaches and a charming, walkable village with plenty of restaurants and local shops.
Both islands are perfect for relaxing, enjoying nature, and taking in the coastal views. Ultimately, it comes down to what kind of experience you’re looking for:
- Choose Jekyll Island if you prefer a quieter, more nature-focused getaway with uncrowded beaches and a strong sense of history.
- Choose St. Simons Island if you enjoy a mix of relaxation and convenience, with more dining, shopping, and entertainment options, but still a very laid-back vibe.
Whichever island you choose, you're sure to have a wonderful time on Georgia's Golden Isles!
