This year we rented a car for a month in Honolulu and found that we hardly used it and it was quite costly. For next year for one month stay in Honolulu again, we thought we would just take the bus since it appears to be so efficient.
We are both seniors living in Canada and was wondering if we (non residents of Hawaii) can apply for the Holo monthly senior bus pass for $6? If so, do we need to make an appt to get the pass bringing our passports? Would the Ala Moana Satellite transit office be able to issue it to us?
Thank you in advance for all your help, as usual! With appreciation.
The Holo Senior Monthly Bus Pass is available to senior residents of Hawaii, including U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and individuals who can prove their residency status. Since you are non-residents (from Canada), you would not typically qualify for the senior pass, which is usually limited to Hawaii residents. However, there are a few things to consider for your situation:
1. Eligibility: The Holo Senior pass is for seniors 65 years or older. If you are both 65 or older, you may be eligible to apply for a reduced fare pass, but this is typically for Hawaii residents only. Visitors or non-residents typically cannot access the discounted monthly senior rate of $6.
2. Proof of Residency: The primary requirement for receiving the pass is proof of residency in Hawaii. While you can still apply for a regular bus pass as a visitor, the senior discount would likely not apply without proof of residence in Hawaii.
3. Application Process: If, by any chance, you are able to qualify or if there are special exceptions made for non-residents, you would likely need to bring documentation such as a passport (for identity verification) and possibly other proof of age (e.g., birth certificates). You may need to visit a designated office such as the Ala Moana Satellite Transit office to submit your application.
For specific and up-to-date details, it's always a good idea to contact the Honolulu transit authority directly or visit the relevant office in person. It’s possible they have special programs or temporary exceptions for tourists or non-residents that could benefit you. Be sure to inquire about all possible options!
