First timer to Arrowhead

Long time chiefs fan from New York going to our first game (Bengals game) at Arrowhead. We are flying in on Saturday and leaving on Monday so it’s pretty much all about the full game experience. We are staying at Hotel Lotus by the stadium so we plan to get to the tailgate nice and early. Just looking for some tips on a few things. We have most of Saturday to do whatever - we love breweries and bbq - where do we go?? And would love some tips on the experienced tailgaters! Many thanks! Go Chiefs!!

Welcome to Kansas City and Arrowhead Stadium! Since this is your first Chiefs game, you’re in for a truly electric experience. Staying at Hotel Lotus right by the stadium is perfect for tailgating and easy access to the game. Arrowhead is famous for having one of the loudest and most passionate crowds in the NFL, so soaking in the pre-game atmosphere is part of the fun.

For Saturday, if you’re into breweries and barbecue, Kansas City is one of the best cities in the country for both. Since you’ll have most of the day, here are some top recommendations:

  • Joe’s Kansas City Bar-B-Que: A must-visit for authentic KC BBQ. Their ribs and burnt ends are legendary.
  • Q39: Modern BBQ spot with a menu that locals rave about. Their brisket and smoked chicken are excellent.
  • Martin City Brewing Company: A local brewery with a great selection of craft beers and a relaxed vibe.
  • KC Bier Co: If you love German-style beers and a lively taproom, this is a fun stop.
  • Boulevard Brewing Company: One of the largest and most iconic breweries in KC. Their tour and tasting room are worth visiting if you want a full experience.

If you’re looking to combine BBQ and breweries, consider starting with brunch or lunch at a BBQ joint, then moving to a brewery in the afternoon before heading back to the hotel to prep for tailgating.

Regarding tailgating at Arrowhead:

  • Arrive early—most hardcore fans start tailgating at least 3–4 hours before kickoff. Since you’re staying nearby, you can pace yourself and enjoy the full scene.
  • Tailgating is all about community—people are very welcoming, especially if you show your Chiefs pride. Bring your own drinks, snacks, and maybe some games to mingle.
  • Parking lots fill up fast, so make sure you follow the hotel or stadium guidance for parking passes or lots assigned to your section.
  • Music, grilling, and friendly rival banter are all part of the fun. Don’t be afraid to strike up a conversation—many tailgaters are happy to share tips, food, or even a beer.
  • Dress for comfort and weather—Kansas City can be chilly in the fall, so layers are smart. Comfortable shoes are key for walking around the lots.

On game day, make sure to soak in the atmosphere inside the stadium as well. Arrowhead’s crowd is famously loud, and the Chiefs’ traditions—like the tomahawk chop and fireworks—add to the experience. If you want memorabilia or souvenirs, the stadium shops are the best spot for authentic Chiefs gear.

Finally, Sunday night and Monday morning can be relaxed. Consider a walk around the Country Club Plaza or grabbing a coffee and breakfast before heading to the airport. This way, you experience a little bit of KC outside of the game.
