Atlanta where to stay?

Hi. Going to tour Georgia Tech. Hotel sites gave me midtown Atlanta as closest choice. Is this a good area for tourists? I'm from a big city and can see where tourists would choose to stay in our downtown. However, in my city downtown is NOT a safe place to be at night. Is midtown Atlanta 1)safe and 2) close to Georgia Tech? Thank you!!
