outing for parents with limited mobility
Hi, there. I will be visiting some of my parents' friends with my parents (mid-80's) in the coming days. We will be staying at the Springhill Suites North in Springfield. My parents have limited mobility. I'm looking for suggestions for outings in nature, possibly for a drive. Ideas I have thus far:
Bass Pro Shops' Aquarium
Fantastic Cavern
For restaurants: Cafe Cusco, Whole Hog Cafe, and Van Gogh Eeterie
Thanks!
Springfield, Missouri, offers several options for visitors with limited mobility, especially if you are looking for outings in nature that can be enjoyed mostly from a car or with minimal walking. Staying at the Springhill Suites North gives you convenient access to both city attractions and scenic drives in the surrounding Ozark region.
Your initial ideas are great, and here are some additional suggestions and details to consider:
- Bass Pro Shops’ Aquarium: This is an excellent option. It has ramps and elevators, making it accessible for visitors with limited mobility. The aquarium features large tanks with fish, turtles, and other wildlife, and there are benches along the viewing areas for resting.
- Fantastic Caverns: One of the few caves in the U.S. where visitors ride through entirely in a Jeep-drawn tram. This makes it ideal for seniors or those with mobility limitations. The guided tour takes about an hour and requires minimal walking.
- Lake Springfield or Fellows Lake Scenic Drive: For a relaxing drive in nature, both lakes offer beautiful views and easy access from your car. You can stop briefly at accessible viewpoints or picnic areas if desired.
- Glade Top Trail Scenic Drive: About 40 minutes from Springfield, this drive offers panoramic views of the Ozarks. You can enjoy the scenery entirely from your car, with pull-offs for photos or short walks if possible.
- Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield: While some walking is required to see all markers, the main roads and parking areas offer views of the battlefield. You can drive slowly along some areas and stop at key points that are accessible.
For restaurants, your current selections are suitable and accessible:
- Cafe Cusco: Cozy Peruvian cuisine, accessible entrances and seating.
- Whole Hog Cafe: Casual barbecue with plenty of space and easy access for wheelchairs or walkers.
- Van Gogh Eeterie: Trendy yet manageable for seniors, with accessible seating areas.
Additional tips:
- Check in advance for any mobility accommodations, especially for Fantastic Caverns, to ensure tram seating is available and convenient.
- If your parents tire easily, plan for shorter drives with multiple stops rather than a full-day outing.
- Consider taking a lightweight folding chair or wheelchair if they need to rest during brief walks or viewpoints.
Overall, combining accessible indoor attractions like the aquarium with scenic drives in the Ozarks provides a comfortable and enjoyable experience for seniors with limited mobility. With careful planning, your parents should have a pleasant and stress-free visit.
