Travel after Thanksgiving

Hi. We are looking to travel out from the UK arriving the day after Thanksgiving. We arrive the following day. Do the shops and houses have Christmas decorations up as want a festive trip. Thank you

Traveling to Boston right after Thanksgiving is a wonderful time to experience the city in a festive mood. In the United States, Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November, and immediately afterward, many areas begin transitioning into full Christmas mode. While Thanksgiving itself is more family-centered and low-key in terms of decorations, the day after—often called "Black Friday"—marks the start of the Christmas shopping season, and the city quickly becomes decorated.

Shopping Areas and Decorations:

  • Downtown Boston / Downtown Crossing: Department stores and shopping streets typically have elaborate Christmas window displays and lights up by the day after Thanksgiving. Expect festive decorations, holiday music, and themed events.
  • Faneuil Hall Marketplace / Quincy Market: This historic area lights up with large Christmas trees, wreaths, and holiday décor. The area often hosts seasonal performances and carolers in the weeks following Thanksgiving.
  • Newbury Street: Known for boutique shops, Newbury Street will be decorated for the holidays with window displays and lights, creating a festive walking environment.

Neighborhood and Residential Decorations:

  • Many Boston neighborhoods, particularly in Back Bay, Beacon Hill, and parts of the South End, begin putting up festive lights and wreaths around houses and on street lamps in the days after Thanksgiving.
  • Some areas have more elaborate displays, though private homes vary. Public holiday lighting events and tree lightings are usually scheduled shortly after Thanksgiving.

Seasonal Experiences:

  • Holiday Markets: Some markets open right after Thanksgiving, offering seasonal crafts, gifts, and festive food.
  • Ice Skating: The Frog Pond at Boston Common typically opens for the season in late November, providing a classic holiday activity surrounded by festive lights.
  • Window Displays and City Lights: Major department stores such as Macy’s and local Boston stores begin their elaborate holiday window displays immediately after Thanksgiving, creating a Christmas atmosphere for visitors.

Overall, arriving in Boston the day after Thanksgiving means you will see the city transitioning into full Christmas mode. Many public decorations, lights, and festive displays will already be up, and stores are fully engaged in the holiday season. While residential areas may vary, central tourist and shopping areas will give you the classic festive experience you are looking for.
