Kihei groceries

Hi again everyone. Our trip is coming up (SO excited) and wanted to get some opinions on best value groceries in Kihei. I know, not going to be cheap, but if anyone has any tips to save $ it would be greatly appreciated!

We have a Costco membership but getting in quite late so won't have time to shop there (or Walmart) and not really wanting to drive back there wasting time on our first full day.

I have a Safeway card and got the Foodland App but its not letting me register for a Maikai membership (its rejecting my Canadian cell phone number so maybe only American's can obtain this?) Times is new since I was last there a 100 years ago...dont see anywhere on their site to apply for a card so maybe they dont have one? Thinking to buy sunscreen from Longs as suggested here might be less expensive than a grocery store. Appreciate all advice as usual. Mahalo!

It’s great that your trip is coming up soon! While it’s true that groceries in Hawaii tend to be a bit more expensive than on the mainland, there are still ways to save, especially in Kihei. Since you mentioned not wanting to drive all the way to Costco or Walmart, here are some tips on grocery shopping in Kihei and some alternatives that might help you save a little money:

1. Foodland (Kihei Location):

Foodland is a popular chain on Maui, and they offer quality products at reasonable prices. While you’re right that the Maikai membership may be a bit tricky for non-U.S. residents (as it often requires a U.S. phone number), Foodland has regular sales and promotions that don’t require a membership. Since you already have the Foodland app, you can still keep an eye out for special discounts and loyalty offers available for app users. Even without a membership, there are often sales on produce, meats, and pantry staples.

  • Tip: You can still use the Foodland app for digital coupons or discounts even if you don’t have the Maikai card. Check the app for weekly promotions and seasonal sales.
  • Tip: Look for Foodland's “bulk” section for cheaper options on grains, beans, nuts, and snacks if you’re stocking up for longer stays.

2. Safeway (Kihei Location):

Safeway in Kihei is another great option. Since you already have a Safeway card, you should be able to use it for discounts on various products, including produce, meats, and pantry staples. Safeway also has an online grocery service, so if you know what you need, you could check for deals ahead of time. Their weekly sales flyers often offer deep discounts on everyday items.

  • Tip: Safeway’s “Just for U” program offers personalized digital coupons, so make sure to browse for additional savings in the app or website.
  • Tip: Since you’re looking for sunscreen, Safeway often has a range of personal care products on sale. You might be able to find good deals on sunscreen there too.

3. Times Supermarket (Kihei Location):

Times Supermarket is another local grocery store in Kihei, and it’s often a bit more affordable than the larger chains. The prices are relatively competitive for things like produce, dairy, and snacks. They may not have the same high-end selection as Foodland, but they’re a great option for budget-conscious shoppers.

  • Tip: Keep an eye on the “Manager’s Specials” or “Discounts” section. Times offers discounts on soon-to-expire items or bulk purchases, which can be a great way to save.
  • Tip: Times is a great place for local Hawaiian products like fresh fish and fruits at a lower cost compared to more touristy markets.

4. Longs Drugs:

For sunscreen, as you mentioned, Longs Drugs (located in both Kihei and other parts of Maui) is a solid choice. They often carry sunscreen at lower prices than most grocery stores. You can find well-known brands like Neutrogena, Banana Boat, and Hawaiian Tropic, sometimes for 20-30% cheaper than at grocery chains.

  • Tip: Longs often has sales on personal care items, so it’s worth checking for promotions. If you’re staying for a while, stock up on essentials like sunscreen and toiletries to avoid higher costs elsewhere.

5. Local Farmers’ Markets:

If you want to experience some of the best local produce and save on fruits and vegetables, Kihei has several farmers’ markets, especially on the weekends. The prices can often be lower than in the grocery stores, and you’ll be supporting local farmers. You can find fresh tropical fruits like papaya, mangoes, and bananas, which are often cheaper than imported goods at chain supermarkets.

  • Tip: The Kihei Farmers Market on South Kihei Road is a great place to pick up fresh produce, smoothies, and snacks at affordable prices.
  • Tip: Farmers’ markets are also great for stocking up on local honey, jams, and homemade baked goods, which can be a cheaper souvenir than the ones in touristy shops.

6. Stocking Up for Your Stay:

Since you're staying in Kihei for a while, it's a good idea to stock up on basics like bread, cereal, rice, pasta, and canned goods early in your trip. This will save you from having to run out for essentials later on, and you'll have more time to relax instead of worrying about meals. Some stores, especially Foodland, offer bulk or larger-sized items that are often a better value than buying smaller portions.

Summary:

  • Foodland and Safeway are your best bets for a variety of grocery items. Keep an eye out for their weekly promotions, and use the apps for digital coupons.
  • Times Supermarket is a more budget-friendly option, especially for basic items and local products.
  • Longs Drugs is a great place for personal care items like sunscreen.
  • Farmers’ Markets offer fresh local produce at great prices and are a fun way to explore Hawaiian foods.

I hope these tips help you save some money while enjoying your time on Maui! Happy shopping, and have an amazing trip! Mahalo!
