April in Montana-

I have a trip planned April 22 -27 and I’ll be in the area of Kalispell.

Kalispell in late April can offer a beautiful mix of springtime scenery, but it also comes with some weather uncertainty. Here’s what you can expect and some suggestions for things to do during your trip:

Weather

In late April, Kalispell is transitioning from winter to spring. Expect cool temperatures, ranging from 30°F to 60°F (around 0°C to 15°C). Snow is still possible, especially in the mountains, but the lower valleys may see milder conditions with some rain showers. Be prepared for variable weather, including potential snow, and bring layers to stay warm.

Things to Do

  • Glacier National Park: Depending on the weather and snow conditions, Glacier National Park may be open, but many of its higher elevation areas and trails will still be inaccessible due to snow. However, the lower-elevation trails and the famous Going-to-the-Sun Road may start to open in late April, but be prepared for road closures. Even so, the views are stunning, and the park offers plenty of wildlife watching opportunities.
  • Whitefish Lake: If the weather is mild enough, you can enjoy some scenic views around Whitefish Lake, which is a short drive from Kalispell. In the spring, the area can be peaceful, with a serene atmosphere for hiking or photography.
  • Flathead Lake: This is one of the largest freshwater lakes in the U.S., and while it may still be too chilly for swimming, it's a beautiful place to take a drive, enjoy a boat tour, or just relax by the water.
  • Historic Downtown Kalispell: Explore Kalispell’s charming downtown, which has local shops, galleries, and eateries. The city is also home to some great historic architecture, and there are museums like the Conrad Mansion Museum, which gives you a glimpse into the region’s history.
  • Skiing at Whitefish Mountain Resort: Whitefish Mountain Resort, located about 25 minutes from Kalispell, may still have some skiing in April, especially early in the month, as the snowpack tends to last into spring. Check for spring skiing deals or other snow sports.

Day Trips and Other Activities

  • Bigfork: A quaint town about 20 minutes from Kalispell, Bigfork is nestled along the shores of Flathead Lake. It’s a great place to visit for art galleries, boutique shops, and beautiful views.
  • Flathead National Forest: If you’re up for a scenic drive, you can head to Flathead National Forest. It offers numerous hiking opportunities, though be prepared for snow at higher elevations.
  • Fishing: The area is known for great fishing, particularly in Flathead Lake and nearby rivers. If you enjoy fishing, April is a good time for spring fishing before the summer crowds arrive.

Dining & Local Food

Kalispell and the surrounding area offer a variety of local eateries. Be sure to try local specialties like bison burgers, Montana trout, or huckleberry-flavored items. Some recommended spots include:

  • The Desoto Grill: A local favorite for BBQ, great casual dining with a laid-back atmosphere.
  • Café Kandahar: Located in Whitefish, this fine dining restaurant is renowned for its creative menu and elegant atmosphere, a great spot for a special dinner.
  • Montana Coffee Traders: A great place for breakfast or a coffee break, serving fresh local brews and tasty baked goods.

Suggestions for Packing

  • Bring layers to account for the unpredictable weather, including a warm jacket, sweater, and a light rain jacket.
  • If you plan to hike or explore outdoor areas, pack sturdy shoes for possible wet or muddy conditions, and trekking poles can be helpful for uneven terrain.
  • Don’t forget sunscreen and sunglasses – even in cooler weather, the sun can be strong at higher elevations.

Overall, April in Kalispell is a bit of a shoulder season, but it’s a beautiful time to visit with fewer crowds. Whether you're exploring Glacier National Park, enjoying the local culture, or just relaxing by a lake, there's plenty to see and do!
