Advice on what to pack for the week of Christmas
Hi, I am visiting the city next week during Christmas for a few days and need advice on what to pack in terms of clothes. Looking at the forecast, it seems the days are warm enough for a jeans, t shirt or a cotton button down but I might need a light sweater or jacket for the evenings and early mornings. Packing water proof shoes and a rain jacket. Anything else I should consider? Appreciate any insights on what to pack as I've heard the weather can be quite unpredictable in Dec. Thanks in advance!
It sounds like you're preparing for a great trip to New Orleans! You're right that the weather in December can be unpredictable, and you’ll need to pack for both warm days and potentially chilly evenings. Here’s a more detailed packing list to help you prepare:
1) Daytime Attire: For the daytime, you’re spot on with your forecast. The weather in New Orleans around Christmas tends to be mild and comfortable, so light clothing will work well for most of the day.
- Jeans, trousers, or lightweight pants: A comfortable pair of jeans or chinos should work well for walking around the city. You might also consider packing a pair of breathable linen or cotton pants for warmer days.
- T-shirts or cotton button-down shirts: These will keep you cool during the day and can be dressed up or down depending on your plans. A mix of short and long-sleeve shirts should work well for the changing weather.
- Comfortable walking shoes: You’ll be doing a lot of exploring, so make sure to pack comfortable shoes for walking. Waterproof shoes are a great idea, especially if it rains (which can happen), but you may also want a pair of stylish yet practical shoes for going out in the evening.
2) Layering for Evenings: As you mentioned, it can get chilly in the evenings, so having some layers to add will be important.
- Light sweater or jacket: A light sweater or a cardigan is perfect for layering when the temperatures dip in the evenings or early mornings. A fleece or light jacket should also work well for added warmth.
- Rain jacket or umbrella: The weather can be unpredictable, and December can sometimes bring rain. Having a rain jacket or a compact umbrella is a smart choice to keep you dry during sudden showers.
3) Accessories and Extras:
- Waterproof shoes: As you’ve already planned, waterproof shoes will be helpful, especially for walking through any puddles or wet streets.
- Hat or scarf: A hat can help protect you from the sun during the day, and a scarf can provide a little extra warmth on chillier evenings.
- Sunglasses: Even in December, the sun can be strong, so don’t forget to pack a pair of sunglasses.
- Small daypack or crossbody bag: A small, comfortable bag for carrying essentials while sightseeing is ideal. You’ll want something that’s easy to carry and keeps your hands free for exploring.
4) Optional Items: Depending on your plans, you might also consider packing the following:
- Dressy attire: If you’re planning to visit any upscale restaurants or attend holiday events, it’s worth packing something a bit more formal, like a nice dress or button-down shirt with slacks.
- Camera: If you’re into photography, be sure to bring a camera or phone with extra memory for capturing the beautiful sights in New Orleans.
In summary, you’ll want to pack for mild temperatures during the day, with layers for cooler evenings and potential rain. You’ve got a good start with your waterproof shoes and rain jacket, but a few additional layers and accessories will ensure you’re prepared for all the weather New Orleans can throw your way.
Have a fantastic trip and enjoy exploring the vibrant city!
