Rookie question. We will be traveling to Maui in June, renting a car, etc. I have read in many of these forums about rental car agreements/passable roads/not upsetting locals. Where are we NOT supposed to be driving? South East Maui past Hana? For example, if I put in Google Maps that we want to drive to the Pipiwai Trailhead from Wailea, it sends us along the Southern Coast...is that not correct? I know this is a total rookie question, so please keep the snark to a minimum--just trying to do the right thing.
No worries, this is a great question, and it’s good that you're being cautious about respecting local guidelines and road conditions. Here’s a breakdown of what you need to know when driving on Maui, especially regarding places that may be restricted or less suitable for rental cars:
1. Hana Highway (Road to Hana): The Road to Hana is a beautiful and famous drive that many visitors take to reach Hana. While the road itself is generally safe, it’s important to be aware that it has many curves, one-lane bridges, and narrow roads, so you’ll need to drive slowly and cautiously. Some rental car companies may restrict driving on certain sections of this road if the road becomes impassable after rain or if you're venturing into certain off-road areas (e.g., beyond Hana, to remote beaches). Check your rental car agreement to make sure the vehicle is allowed on the Hana Highway and other rural roads. If you plan on continuing past Hana toward Kipahulu (the Pipiwai Trailhead), make sure the rental car agreement doesn’t prohibit travel on these more rugged areas.
2. Southern Coast Road to Pipiwai Trail: The route that Google Maps suggests through the Southern Coast (Route 31) toward the Pipiwai Trailhead is generally passable, but there are a couple of things to keep in mind: - Road conditions: The road beyond Hana gets less maintained as you continue further south, especially past Kipahulu. While it's not considered an “off-road” area, it can be a bit more rugged, and certain sections of the road may be damaged due to weather or landslides. - Rental car agreements: Many rental car companies prohibit driving on gravel or unpaved roads, and while the Southern Coast is mostly paved, parts of it may still be restricted. Make sure to clarify with the rental company whether your car is permitted to go on this route. Additionally, local residents and some rental agencies may advise against driving on some lesser-known roads in the area, especially if they’re difficult to navigate or require high-clearance vehicles.
3. Roads That Are Typically Off-Limits:
4. Respecting Local Guidelines and Roads: As a general rule, it’s important to follow local advice and always check your rental car agreement for any restrictions about where you can drive. Locals are often protective of certain areas, especially if they involve fragile ecosystems or off-road routes that can cause damage. Always prioritize safety, respect local land, and avoid trying to navigate roads that are known to be dangerous or difficult for rental vehicles.
5. What to Do: - If Google Maps sends you on an unfamiliar route, double-check if it’s a well-traveled road and see if other sources (like forums, guidebooks, or local advice) recommend it. - Be cautious when following directions that take you off well-paved roads. Even in areas where roads are legal to drive on, rough weather conditions or unexpected road closures can cause difficulties. - If in doubt, ask at your hotel or a local tourist information center for advice about specific routes.
In conclusion, the route to Pipiwai Trail via the Southern Coast is generally acceptable but requires caution and checking with your rental agency about the specifics. As long as you’re staying on paved roads and following the general tourist routes, you should be fine, but be mindful of any restrictions or advisories. Have a fantastic trip to Maui!
