lunch at Mama Fish without a reservation?

For the second time in 2 years we submitted a request on the website a few months in advance for a dinner reservation at Mama Fish in January, and both times there was no availability. Both times we asked for a specific date and time but added a note that we could come at a different time on that date or on a different date during that week. Both times we got a response that our request was received but no availability, although their automated response said that if there are cancellations it will likely be 24-48 hours before the requested time. We are now less than 4 weeks before the requested date (we will arrive in Maui January 28 and requested a reservation for January 29, 30, or 31). I'm not expecting them to have a cancellation. But I read somewhere that you can go to Mama Fish for lunch without a reservation--does anyone know if that's true? Looking at the website now, it shows that you can reserve both lunch and dinner, but even for lunch there are no available dates while we will be there.

I can try calling them when we get there to see if there is anything available for lunch or dinner, but if they say no, do you think it's worth a try going for lunch without a reservation? And if so, would it be better to go when they open at 11 am or after 2 (last lunch seating is 3:30)?

It sounds like you’ve been having quite a bit of trouble with getting a reservation at Mama Fish House, which is certainly a popular spot in Maui! While it’s understandable that the dinner reservations are highly sought after, lunch could be a more flexible option, depending on when you visit. Let’s go through some suggestions for how to approach getting a table at Mama Fish House without a reservation.

Lunch at Mama Fish House Without a Reservation

It is indeed true that you can visit Mama Fish House for lunch without a reservation, but it’s important to note that this doesn’t guarantee a seat, especially during peak times. However, lunch service typically tends to be less busy than dinner, so it might be easier to get a table. Since you mentioned that the online reservation system for lunch shows no availability, it’s still possible that there could be walk-in availability, particularly if you time it right.

Best Times to Try for Lunch Without a Reservation

  • Arrive Early: Your best bet is to try arriving right when the restaurant opens at 11:00 AM. At this time, they may still have available seating for walk-ins, and the restaurant is less likely to be crowded. Early arrival increases your chances of securing a spot.
  • After 2:00 PM: If you don’t want to go at opening time, the next best window would be after 2:00 PM, as many people will have finished their lunch by then. Since the last seating for lunch is at 3:30 PM, going in the afternoon could give you a better chance to walk in and get a table without a reservation.
  • Mid-week and Off-peak Days: Since you’re visiting in late January, it might be a bit less crowded than peak tourist season, but still expect some busy times. Mid-week days (like Monday to Thursday) tend to be less packed than weekends. If possible, try going earlier in the week or during less popular hours.

Calling Ahead

If you’re really set on dining at Mama Fish House, it’s a good idea to call them once you’re on the island. Although you mentioned not expecting a cancellation, it’s still worth calling to check for any last-minute availability, as sometimes there may be a cancellation or adjustment in seating availability closer to the date. Call at least 1-2 days ahead of your desired time to check, as this will give you the best chance to get in.

Walk-in Tips

  • Arrive early: If you plan to walk in without a reservation, arriving right when the restaurant opens (11 AM) or during the afternoon (after 2 PM) is your best bet to secure a seat. The earlier you go, the better your chances of getting a table.
  • Be flexible: If you’re willing to wait, sometimes showing up without a reservation and being flexible with your seating time can result in a table opening up sooner than expected.
  • Check with the Host: When you arrive, ask the host or hostess if they expect any cancellations or if they can give you an estimate on when a table might be available. Some restaurants are willing to take walk-ins if there’s availability later in the day.

Final Thoughts

While it can be frustrating to secure a reservation at a popular spot like Mama Fish House, especially when the online system shows no availability, there are still options for dining without one. Try showing up at opening time or later in the afternoon, and if you're still concerned, calling ahead can help improve your chances of getting a seat. Mama Fish House is worth the effort, with its gorgeous setting and fresh seafood, so hopefully, you'll be able to get in and enjoy the experience!
