Which Fremont Hotel?

Planning next trip and like to stay downtown. Just suits us. Happy to travel to the Strip when we want but we enjoy the vibe of Fremont and prefer to stay there. Budget rules out The Circa so looking at The Plaza, The California, Main Street station or my usual haunt Four Queens. So from those 4 what do we think. My first choice this time was the Plaza just a deluxe king. It’s the wife and I - I’m 53 wife is 43 and I like the pool area of The Plaza (it’s May so may be too hot though morning swims would be nice) and its location. Reviews look positive and even though the Cal is higher on trip advisor few middling reviews recently and not sure the Hawaiian theme works for me. How do we feel about The Plaza. It’s a 2 week trip as from the UK so will be our home for a while.

It sounds like you're planning a fantastic trip to Las Vegas and really enjoy the downtown Fremont vibe! Staying downtown gives you a more laid-back, local feel compared to the bustling Strip, and there are some great options for hotels in that area. Based on your preferences, let's take a look at the four hotels you're considering: The Plaza, The California, Main Street Station, and Four Queens.

Here's a breakdown of each hotel to help you make your decision:

  • The Plaza: The Plaza is a solid choice, especially for a 2-week stay. It has a central location on Fremont Street, making it easy to access the lively atmosphere of the area. The pool area is a highlight, and it could be great for early morning swims, though, as you mentioned, the weather in May can be pretty hot. The hotel has a classic Vegas feel with some modern upgrades and tends to offer good value for its location. Reviews for the Plaza have generally been positive, especially in terms of cleanliness and the overall experience. It’s a bit more traditional than some of the other downtown hotels, but it's a great option if you prefer a less "themed" environment. Since you're staying for two weeks, this could provide you with a comfortable, central base for exploring both Fremont and taking occasional trips to the Strip.
  • The California: The California is known for its friendly service and the Hawaiian theme, which, as you pointed out, might not be to everyone's taste. The hotel is a bit older but offers a comfortable stay and tends to have decent reviews. The California is also located on Fremont Street, so it’s easy to enjoy the action. However, you mentioned some recent middling reviews, which might be something to consider. The hotel does have a pool area, but it might not be as modern or spacious as the Plaza’s. If you’re willing to embrace the Hawaiian theme, it could be a fun experience, but if it’s not your thing, you might feel it’s a bit off the mark for your stay.
  • Main Street Station: Main Street Station is another option to consider, especially if you like staying in a more relaxed and less crowded environment. It’s located just a little off Fremont Street, so it’s a short walk to the action but offers a slightly quieter vibe. The hotel has a more classic casino feel and is known for being budget-friendly. The pool area isn’t as impressive as The Plaza's, but the hotel does have solid reviews. Some guests enjoy the laid-back atmosphere and the historic aspects of the property. If you’re looking for a more understated Vegas experience, this could be a good choice, but it’s a bit more basic in terms of amenities compared to the Plaza.
  • Four Queens: Four Queens is a classic Fremont hotel with an established reputation. It’s one of the most popular choices for visitors who enjoy the Fremont vibe. The hotel is well-known for its location right on Fremont Street, so you’re in the heart of all the action. The rooms are simple and comfortable, and the casino is a bit smaller compared to places like Circa or The Plaza. While you mentioned it’s your usual haunt, if you’re looking for something a little different this time, it’s worth considering the other options. The pool area is small, but the price point is generally very affordable, and you’ll definitely get the traditional Vegas experience here.

My Thoughts:
The Plaza seems like a great option for your trip, especially with its central location, good reviews, and the pool area. If you're looking for a more relaxed, traditional Vegas experience without the more modern, flashy feel of places like Circa, The Plaza could offer the perfect balance. It also provides you with easy access to Fremont Street for all the entertainment and is just a short trip to the Strip when you're in the mood for it.

However, if you're looking for something a little more low-key and budget-friendly, Main Street Station could be a good alternative, especially if you don’t mind being a bit further from the Fremont action. It’s still close enough for you to enjoy everything but without the higher price tag.

In summary, I’d recommend giving The Plaza a shot if you’re after a balance of comfort, location, and pool access. If you’re open to a Hawaiian theme and want a higher-end option, The California could be worth considering, but if that theme doesn’t sit well with you, the Plaza will likely be the more comfortable choice. Either way, you’ll have a great time staying downtown!
