Uber or Lyft availability

I will be spending 2 weeks in August in downtown Bar Harbor, without a car. Are driving services like Uber or Lyft available? I see there is a taxi company in town. Any help is appreciated. Thanks,

Martha

Hi Martha,

It's great that you'll be spending two weeks in Bar Harbor this August! While Bar Harbor is a charming and walkable town, it’s important to note that ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft are limited in the area, particularly during the busy summer season. Here’s what you can expect for transportation options while you're in Bar Harbor:

Uber and Lyft Availability: Unfortunately, both Uber and Lyft have limited availability in Bar Harbor, especially in the peak summer months. Due to the town's small size and the seasonal nature of tourism, there may not always be drivers available, particularly during busy times like evenings or weekends. It’s a good idea to have alternative options in mind just in case.

Taxi Services: As you mentioned, there is a taxi company in town, and taxis are the most reliable option for getting around Bar Harbor if Uber or Lyft aren't available. Several local taxi services operate in the area, and they are typically easy to book by phone. Some of the more popular taxi services include:

  • Bar Harbor Taxi—a well-known local service that provides rides within Bar Harbor and to nearby areas.
  • Acadia Taxi—another option for transportation in and around Bar Harbor, especially for trips to Acadia National Park.

Alternative Transportation Options: Aside from taxis, here are a few other transportation options to consider while in Bar Harbor:

  • Shuttle Services: There are shuttle buses that run between Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park, as well as other local attractions. These are a convenient option if you plan on visiting the park frequently.
  • Bicycle Rentals: Bar Harbor is a very bike-friendly town, and renting a bicycle is a great way to get around. Many rental shops offer bikes for a day or a week, and it’s an enjoyable way to explore the town and nearby areas.
  • Walking: Since you're staying downtown, you’ll find that most attractions, restaurants, and shops are within walking distance. Bar Harbor is compact and easy to explore on foot, and walking can be one of the best ways to experience the town.
  • Car Rental or Tours: If you need to go beyond Bar Harbor or want more flexibility during your stay, you might consider renting a car for a day or two. Alternatively, there are guided tours available that can take you around the area and to Acadia National Park.

Summary: While Uber and Lyft may not be reliable in Bar Harbor, you’ll find that local taxi services are a great alternative, and there are plenty of options for exploring the area without a car. Between taxis, shuttles, biking, and walking, you’ll have no trouble getting around and enjoying everything this beautiful town has to offer.

Hope you have a wonderful trip!
