Security at beach parking lots

Hi all! My husband and I are thrilled about our vacation next week on the BI. Will be visiting many beaches and will be snorkeling. How safe is it to leave valuables (I.e. purse, phones) hidden inside our rental car? Do some beaches offer lockers? How would you recommend we keep our stuff safe while we’re in the water?

Thanks so much.

It’s fantastic that you’re headed to the Big Island for your vacation! Snorkeling and exploring the beaches are definitely highlights, but I understand your concern about the safety of your valuables while you’re in the water. Here are some things to keep in mind to keep your belongings safe:

Security at Beach Parking Lots: Most of the beaches on the Big Island, especially the more popular ones, do have public parking lots. However, while parking lots are generally safe, it’s always best to exercise caution. Beach parking lots can sometimes attract opportunistic thieves, so leaving valuables in plain sight is never a good idea. It’s important to take extra precautions and hide any valuables out of sight, ideally in your trunk or under a seat. Some things to consider:

  • Hide your valuables: Always store valuables like purses, phones, or cameras out of sight. If possible, lock them in the trunk or in an area that is harder to access, such as under a seat.
  • Use a car lockbox: Some rental car companies offer a small, portable lockbox that you can attach to the interior of the car. This is a good option if you don’t want to leave your things in the trunk.
  • Don’t leave anything in sight: Even if it’s just a water bottle or beach towel, try to keep everything out of view to avoid attracting attention.

Lockers at Beaches: Unfortunately, not all beaches on the Big Island offer lockers for storing valuables, and those that do are typically found at more developed areas, such as resort beaches or popular spots like Kailua-Kona or Hilo. If you're visiting a more remote or less developed beach, there may not be locker options available. In that case, here are some alternative options:

  • Use waterproof bags: Consider investing in a waterproof, anti-theft bag or pouch. These are often small enough to take with you while you snorkel, and they can keep your valuables safe and dry while you're in the water.
  • Beachfront Resorts: If you're staying at a beachfront hotel or resort, check with them to see if they offer lockers or a safe storage option for guests. Some resorts might offer a day-use safe for storing your valuables while you enjoy the beach.
  • Buddy system: If you're snorkeling with a partner, one of you can stay with the belongings while the other enjoys the water. You can also take turns watching over the items if the beach is not too crowded.

Other Tips for Keeping Your Stuff Safe: Aside from using lockboxes or waterproof bags, here are a few general safety tips:

  • Bring only what you need: The fewer valuables you bring with you, the less risk there is. Consider leaving expensive items, like jewelry or extra electronics, at your accommodation.
  • Check the parking area: Look for any signs or cameras that might indicate surveillance. Some beaches may have a security presence or be monitored by cameras, providing some extra peace of mind.
  • Be mindful of your surroundings: Always pay attention to who’s around you in the parking lot and on the beach. If something feels off, trust your instincts and consider moving your items or relocating to a different spot.

Conclusion: While no place can be 100% safe, taking a few precautions can help you avoid theft while you enjoy your time on the Big Island. The key is to keep your valuables out of sight, use waterproof pouches, or look for a resort or beach that offers storage options. Staying vigilant and not leaving valuables unattended in the car or on the beach will help ensure that you have a stress-free experience while snorkeling and exploring the beautiful beaches of Hawaii!
