Koloa Landing or Kiahuna Plantation
I’m torn between two bedroom units at each of these properties for a family of four. I initially booked at Kiahuna through VRBO, due to the beachfront property, but my husband thinks the pool at Koloa will be super fun for our kids (5 and 10) and we can just drive to the beach.
One advantage to Koloa Landing is that we can use the pools early on check in day, since we’ll be heading over on a morning flight from Oahu. Same on checkout day before we head north. I just feel if I am in Hawaii I want to be seeing the ocean as much as possible. (For context we also have 5 nights booked in the north at Hanalei Bay Resort).
Any recommendations or insights from those familiar with these properties? Also, how is the pool at Poipu Athletic Club that Kiahuna guests have access to? Thank you!
Both Koloa Landing and Kiahuna Plantation are excellent options for a family vacation in Kauai, and each offers its own unique benefits. Below are some considerations to help you decide which property might be a better fit for your family:
Kiahuna Plantation:
- Beachfront Location: The main advantage of Kiahuna Plantation is its direct beachfront access. If you're looking to maximize your time by the ocean, this is the better option. The property is located right on Poipu Beach, which is one of the most popular and kid-friendly beaches on Kauai. You’ll have easy access to the beach for swimming, snorkeling, and relaxing, all within walking distance from your condo.
- Laid-back Atmosphere: Kiahuna Plantation offers a more laid-back, beachy vibe. The condos are located in a tropical garden setting, with expansive lawns and lots of open space. It’s a perfect spot for kids to run around, and you’ll enjoy the ocean view and breezes right from your lanai.
- Access to Poipu Athletic Club Pool: Kiahuna guests have access to the Poipu Athletic Club, which is a nice bonus. The pool at the athletic club is large and well-maintained, with a nice poolside bar and grill. However, it is not located directly on the beach, and the atmosphere is more of a private, residential-style pool, not as tropical or beach-oriented as some others.
Koloa Landing:
- Fantastic Pools: Koloa Landing is well-known for its impressive pools. The resort features an expansive pool area with multiple pools, including a kids' pool with a fun water slide. The pool area is a big draw for families, so if your kids are particularly excited about spending time in the water, this could be a great choice. The resort also has a relaxing, resort-style atmosphere.
- Proximity to the Beach: While Koloa Landing is not directly on the beach, it is just a short drive (or walk) away from the popular Poipu Beach. This means you can enjoy the pool and also head to the beach whenever you feel like it. The beach is still very accessible, but it’s important to keep in mind that it’s not as convenient as stepping right onto the sand from your condo.
- Convenience with Early Pool Access: Koloa Landing allows you to use the pools on your check-in and checkout days, which is a great perk. If you’re arriving early on your flight, this can be a major convenience, especially if you’re traveling with kids. They’ll have plenty of fun at the pools while you wait for your condo to be ready or after you check out on your last day.
Other Considerations:
- Proximity to Attractions: Both properties are located in Poipu, which is an ideal base for exploring the island. However, Koloa Landing is a little more centrally located for visiting other parts of the island. It’s about a 20-30 minute drive to the south shore’s hiking trails and shops, while Hanalei Bay Resort is about an hour’s drive from Poipu. If you’re planning to explore the island a lot, Koloa Landing might be a better option in terms of proximity to both the beach and other attractions.
- North Shore Stay: Since you have 5 nights booked at Hanalei Bay Resort on the north shore, the pool at Koloa Landing could provide an appealing option for some pool time while you’re in Poipu, but you’ll still get to experience the ocean from Hanalei Bay. It’s worth noting that the beaches and overall atmosphere at the north shore (Hanalei) are quite different from the more resort-style vibe of Poipu. So your choice might depend on whether you’re hoping to explore both the beach and resort amenities on the south shore, or if you prefer the quieter, more natural setting of the north shore.
Conclusion:
If you want to be directly on the beach and value quick access to the ocean with a more relaxed, laid-back vibe, Kiahuna Plantation is a fantastic choice. However, if your kids are particularly excited about enjoying a large pool area with a water slide and you appreciate the convenience of early pool access, Koloa Landing might be the better option, especially if you don’t mind driving a short distance to the beach.
Both properties offer excellent accommodations for families, and you’ll have a great time at either one. It comes down to whether you prioritize beach access or pool fun and convenience. Either way, you’re in a beautiful location with plenty to see and do on the island!
