South Kihei Road
We are arriving this weekend and are staying in 900 block of S. Kihei Road. I've looked at multiple news sources to try and figure out where the road is washed out. We will be arriving after dark and want to avoid any issues.
Can anyone tell me approximately where S. Kihei Road is washed out?
TIA
Karen
Good question, Karen. You’re right to check — there *have* been road issues on parts of South Kīhei Road (SKR) recently. Here’s the latest based on county updates and local news:
- On August 8, 2025, Maui County reported that the southbound lane of SKR is closed between Uwapo Road and Ohukai Road due to coastal flooding.
- The closure is because the makai shoulder (the ocean-side edge) of the road was undermined by strong surf and high tides, making that part unstable.
- Officials are advising drivers heading *into* Kihei to use a detour via Kenolio Road.
- There is also a note of flooding risk at the Waiakoa Bridge (SKR between North Kihei and Uwapo), so extra caution is advised.
- According to a county press release, SKR was reopened to all traffic as of August 14, 2025, from North Kihei Road to Ohukai Road, but more work is planned (paving, etc.) with possible temporary closures.
- The Kihei Community Association notes there are barricades and signage around Ohukai where previous closures have occurred, so be alert.
Bottom line guidance:
- Yes, there *have been* washout / erosion issues on SKR, especially in the area between Uwapo and Ohukai.
- The road is reportedly open now, but repairs are ongoing, and temporary closures are still possible, especially during daytime work hours.
- Since you’re arriving after dark, it’s wise to be cautious. Watch for construction signs, barricades, or changes in traffic flow.
- Have a backup route ready: using Kenolio Road to detour around the affected section is recommended by county officials.
If you can, check a real-time map (Google Maps, Waze, or a local traffic app) when you arrive to confirm road status. And if you get there early, perhaps wait until after repairs and conditions are confirmed.
Hope that helps and that your stay in Kihei is smooth and safe!
