First timers to South Haven with young kids!

Hello all,

We have heard great things about South Haven. Is it a good place to go with families of small children: 6 and 8 years olds.

Please share any ideas! Thank you in advance!

South Haven is an excellent destination for families with young children! The town offers a mix of beach fun, outdoor activities, and family-friendly attractions that will keep your 6- and 8-year-olds entertained while you enjoy the relaxing atmosphere. Here are some ideas for making the most of your time in South Haven with young kids:

1. South Haven Beaches

South Haven’s beautiful beaches are one of the top attractions. Kids will love playing in the sand and splashing in the shallow waters. The South Haven City Beach is particularly family-friendly, with clean facilities and easy access to restaurants and shops nearby. Make sure to bring beach toys, snacks, and sunscreen for a fun day by the water.

2. Michigan Maritime Museum

Take a visit to the Michigan Maritime Museum, where kids can learn about the history of the Great Lakes and see historic boats. The museum often offers boat tours, and during the summer months, you can take a ride on a classic schooner, which is a great way to get the kids excited about the water and enjoy views of Lake Michigan.

3. Kids' Play Areas

If you need a break from the beach, there are several parks and play areas around South Haven. The Riverside Park is a great spot for a family picnic and has a large playground. The Blue Star Trail also runs through South Haven, and it’s a safe and scenic place for walking or biking with your kids. You can rent bikes or even bikes with trailers to make it easier for the younger ones to enjoy the ride!

4. Strawberry Fields

If you’re visiting in the summer, be sure to check out Stovers’ Farm Market for some strawberry picking (typically in late June to early July). This activity is a fun way for kids to experience where their food comes from and to enjoy fresh, juicy strawberries! There are also other fun activities for kids at local farms during the summer months, like petting zoos and hayrides.

5. Lighthouse and Pier

Take a stroll to the South Haven Lighthouse and the nearby pier. It’s a beautiful area to take in the scenery, and kids will love walking along the pier. You can also enjoy watching boats pass by while taking photos at the lighthouse. This is a relaxing but engaging activity for the whole family.

6. Wine Tasting for the Adults

For parents, South Haven is home to several wineries and vineyards, and some of them offer wine tastings with family-friendly atmospheres. While the kids are playing or exploring, you can enjoy a tasting at a local winery, such as Greenbush Brewing Co. or Contessa Wine Cellars, both of which have outdoor seating areas where families can relax and enjoy the setting.

7. Shopping and Dining

Explore the charming downtown area with local shops and restaurants. Phoenix Street is lined with boutique stores where you can find unique toys, gifts, and local artisan products. For dining, there are many kid-friendly restaurants in town, such as The Golden Brown Bakery (known for their delicious donuts and treats) or The South Haven Brewpub, where you can enjoy a casual meal with the kids.

8. Day Trips Nearby

If you have extra time and want to explore nearby, consider a short day trip to the Warren Dunes State Park in nearby Sawyer, Michigan, or visit the Saugatuck Dunes State Park for additional beaches, nature trails, and opportunities for outdoor adventures.

Overall, South Haven offers plenty to do for families with young children, from beach fun and outdoor activities to historical museums and local farms. With its laid-back atmosphere and welcoming vibe, it’s a perfect destination for a family getaway. Enjoy your trip!
