Okaloosa Island / Waterscape Condos

We visited Destin 10 years ago and now we have a 3 year old. Will be staying at Waterscape. Anyone been here recently or have stayed specifically in 417? Trying to get a feel of the grounds and the rooms.

I tried to find an Okaloosa Island forum but could not find it. What are some things to do in the area with a 3 year old? I don’t know much about the Gulfarium. Mini Golf nearby? Etc…

Also the best places to eat in Fort Walton and Destin?

Thank you in advance!

Waterscape Condominiums on Okaloosa Island are a popular choice for families, offering direct Gulf views, easy beach access, and spacious units. While I don’t have direct reports from unit 417 specifically, units in the 4th floor generally offer elevated views of the Gulf, the pool area, and the surrounding landscaping, with quieter surroundings compared to lower floors near the parking area. The grounds are well-maintained, with lush tropical landscaping, multiple pools including a heated pool, and easy access to the beach via a short walkway. There are also BBQ grills, a fitness area, and elevator access.

For a 3-year-old, the area has plenty of activities that are easy to manage with a little one:

  • Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park – Located just a few minutes from Waterscape, the Gulfarium has marine shows, touch tanks, and kid-friendly exhibits. It’s small enough to navigate easily with a toddler and very engaging.
  • Beach Play – Waterscape’s beach access is ideal for toddlers. Soft sand, shallow water near the shore, and easy supervision make it perfect for building sandcastles and splashing in the water.
  • Mini Golf – There are several kid-friendly mini golf courses nearby, such as Smuggler’s Cove Adventure Golf and Pirate’s Island Adventure Golf in Fort Walton Beach, which are short drives and have whimsical, fun courses for little kids.
  • Big Kahuna’s Water & Adventure Park – About a 15–20 minute drive, it offers a toddler area with splash zones and smaller slides suitable for young children.
  • Boardwalk at Okaloosa Island – Scenic walking areas and playgrounds, great for stroller walks or short excursions with your toddler.

When it comes to food in Fort Walton Beach and Destin, there are plenty of family-friendly options as well as local seafood favorites:

  • Destin:
    • The Back Porch – Gulf-front, casual seafood dining, famous for fish tacos and fried shrimp.
    • Hurricane Grill & Wings – Casual, kid-friendly, and has a fun menu for little ones.
    • McGuire’s Irish Pub – Lively atmosphere, hearty American fare, and great desserts (more suitable if kids can handle a longer, bustling meal).
    • Pompano Joe’s – Gulf-front seafood with an island vibe; offers kid-friendly menu options.
  • Fort Walton Beach:
    • LuLu’s Destin – Owned by Jimmy Buffett’s sister; very family-friendly with playground and casual fare.
    • Another Broken Egg Café – Great breakfast/brunch spot for families with toddlers.
    • Old Bay Steamer – Casual seafood, good for families, and quick service.

Other tips:

  • Waterscape has a small market/convenience store nearby for snacks, drinks, or toddler needs.
  • Consider bringing a beach tent or umbrella for sun protection—Florida sun can be strong even in short periods on the sand.
  • If you plan multiple outings, a stroller-friendly plan works best as parking can be tight at popular areas like the Gulfarium or mini golf.

Overall, Waterscape is very family-friendly, and with a 3-year-old, you’ll find plenty of activities within short drives, while enjoying easy access to the beautiful Gulf beaches.
