Best excursion for half day shelling excursions

Hello! We arrive next Tuesday!! Cannot wait! We have been coming to Sanibel for 20+ years. This will be our second trip back since Ian… we were there last April as well!!! And as much as I’ve shelled in 20 some years, we’ve never taken a boat excursion to do so. I would like to try that this time!! Is the charter to Cayo Costa my best choice? Or are there any others I’m missing? Probably only wanting to do a half day… but open to suggestions.

Thanks so much! Can’t wait to be back on “my” beloved island soon!!!!! ( happy tears!!)

Sanibel Island is a world-renowned destination for shelling, and taking a boat excursion is a fantastic way to access remote beaches that are otherwise hard to reach. Since you’re looking for a half-day adventure, there are a few options to consider, including the popular trips to Cayo Costa.

Cayo Costa is often considered the prime destination for serious shellers. The island has long stretches of pristine beaches with minimal foot traffic, making it ideal for finding rare and beautiful shells. Many charters operate from nearby marinas on Pine Island Sound or Captiva Island, offering half-day trips that usually last 4–5 hours. These trips typically include transportation, water, and sometimes light snacks, but you’ll want to bring your own shelling gear and sunscreen.

Other options for half-day shelling excursions include:

  • Captiva Island Charters: These trips are slightly shorter and offer access to quieter, less developed beaches. You can often combine a shelling trip with dolphin spotting or scenic cruising around the barrier islands.
  • Local Sanibel Fishing and Shelling Tours: Some local operators run eco-friendly tours that focus on both shelling and exploring the local marine ecosystem. These are great if you enjoy a more educational approach.
  • Pine Island Sound tours: These tours take you through shallow backwaters and mangrove channels, allowing you to reach hidden beaches and flats where shells wash up in abundance. They can be half-day or full-day trips, with the half-day usually focused purely on shelling and light sightseeing.

Tips to make the most of your half-day shelling trip:

  • Book early, especially in-season, as charters can fill quickly.
  • Bring water, sunscreen, and a light snack; some charters provide these, but not all.
  • Wear water shoes or sandals — beaches can have shells underfoot that are sharp.
  • Check the tide schedule: low tide often exposes more shells and makes walking on sandbars easier.
  • Ask the operator if the trip includes stops at multiple islands or just Cayo Costa; sometimes a mix of locations can provide a more diverse shelling experience.

In summary, a half-day charter to Cayo Costa is an excellent choice for dedicated shellers seeking pristine beaches and abundant finds. Alternatives like Captiva Island or Pine Island Sound tours are also worth considering if you want a slightly different experience, perhaps with additional scenic or wildlife opportunities.
