Rain this week

Hi all! I am a little worried for the weather this week. Staying in Wailea from the 16th-22nd and showing storms for a majority of the weekend. Is there a storm rolling through or is this just predictions from the winds? Should I be concerned? Will we get any sun? I know most weather apps are not accurate for Hawaii but even the local stations that were recommended are showing the same predictions. Is there a chance this could change?

Hello,

Weather in Hawaii, especially in areas like Wailea on Maui, can be quite variable, and forecasts can change quickly due to the islands’ microclimates. Here’s some guidance for your stay from the 16th–22nd:

1. Understanding the forecast: When local weather apps or stations show storms or rain, it can mean a few things:

  • It could be a passing front or low-pressure system bringing rain and wind.
  • It could also reflect trade winds pushing moisture over the islands, which can create showers that may be brief or localized.
  • Hawaii’s terrain causes weather to vary widely; the leeward side of the island (Wailea is on the south/southwest coast) tends to be drier, while windward sides get more frequent rain.

2. Should you be concerned?

  • Generally, short rain showers are common and may pass quickly, leaving plenty of sunny periods.
  • Unless a severe weather warning or flash flood advisory is issued, there is usually no need to cancel plans.
  • Outdoor activities are often still feasible; just plan for some flexibility.

3. Chance of sun:

  • Even on stormy-looking forecasts, you are likely to get sunny periods, especially in Wailea, which is usually one of the drier areas on Maui.
  • Showers often last only 10–30 minutes and can be interspersed with sunshine.

4. Tips for planning:

  • Check the forecast daily closer to your activities.
  • Be flexible with outdoor plans and have a backup indoor activity in case of heavier rain.
  • Consider using local weather sources such as KHON2 or KITV forecasts, or NOAA updates, which are generally more accurate for the islands than generic global apps.

In short, don’t panic about the forecast. Storm predictions in Hawaii are often overestimated, and Wailea’s sunny microclimate means you’ll probably still enjoy plenty of sun, with possible short showers.
