Shark cage diving is an exciting and popular adventure in Hawaii, offering close encounters with large sharks in a controlled and safe environment. Most operators provide full safety briefings, wetsuits, cages, and expert guides to ensure a safe experience for participants of varying swimming abilities.

The best island for shark cage trips is the Big Island (Island of Hawaii), particularly around Kona. The waters off Kona are clear, and there’s a healthy population of Galapagos and tiger sharks that are typically the focus of these tours.

When considering a shark cage trip, keep in mind the following:

  • Most tours operate in the early morning or late afternoon when water conditions are calm and visibility is good.
  • Operators often provide transportation from nearby hotels, snacks, and beverages.
  • Some trips allow you to be fully submerged in the cage, while others offer an option to remain partially above water depending on comfort level.
  • It’s recommended to book in advance, especially during peak tourist seasons, as trips can fill up quickly.

For your itinerary, combining a shark cage dive on the Big Island with volcano sightseeing is very doable. You could spend a couple of days in Kona for the marine adventure and then travel to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park to experience active lava flows and other volcanic features.

Some reputable shark cage operators in Kona include:

  • Jack’s Diving Locker – Offers daily shark cage dives with experienced guides and safety briefings.
  • Kona Ocean Adventures – Known for knowledgeable staff and options for both full cage immersion and partial exposure.
  • Sea Paradise – Offers small group tours that provide a more personal experience and good wildlife viewing.

Overall, shark cage diving in Kona is considered safe, thrilling, and a bucket-list experience, and pairing it with a volcano visit provides a perfect mix of Hawaii’s unique adventures.
