How's the surf at Tunnels?

Hello,

We are coming late May and just wondering if the surf at Tunnels is calming down? We love snorkeling there but haven't been this early in the season with our previous visits. Would love to scuba there as well if possible. Is this currently allowed? I know Fathom Five used to run a guided dive tour of the site, but don't seem to do so anymore. Not sure why. Any feedback around this would be appreciated.

Cheers,

Mark

Tunnels Beach on Kauai, also known as Makua Beach, is a fantastic spot for snorkeling and scuba diving, but conditions vary with the season. By late May, the surf usually begins to calm down compared to the winter months, when waves can be quite large and rough on the north shore. However, there can still be occasional swells, so it’s always best to check the daily surf reports before heading out.

For snorkeling, late spring is generally excellent. The water is often clearer, and the reef is teeming with tropical fish, sea turtles, and sometimes Hawaiian monk seals. The north shore beaches are protected by the reef, which creates calmer lagoons closer to shore, ideal for snorkeling even when the outer surf is stronger.

Regarding scuba diving, Tunnels is still open to divers, but there are some important considerations:

  • There are no official guided dive tours by Fathom Five anymore, but independent dive shops on Kauai may offer guided trips to Tunnels or other nearby dive sites.
  • Diving conditions depend heavily on ocean clarity and surf; calm days are necessary, especially for less experienced divers.
  • Permits are generally not required for recreational scuba diving, but always respect protected marine areas and follow local guidelines to protect the coral and marine life.

Safety tips:

  • Arrive early in the morning when winds are typically calmer and water conditions are better.
  • Check local surf reports and tides; avoid going out if there are large waves or strong currents.
  • If you’re new to diving or unfamiliar with the area, consider hiring a local dive guide for safety and to enhance the experience.

In summary, late May is a good time for both snorkeling and scuba diving at Tunnels Beach, with calmer surf compared to winter. Guided scuba tours are still available through other operators, even though Fathom Five no longer runs them. Always monitor conditions and prioritize safety, and you’ll have a rewarding experience exploring this stunning reef system.
