Sport in Chicago

Hello,

Friends and I are travelling to America from the UK in May and we are in Chicago between May 1st and May 4th. We are keen to go to a sporting event whilst we are there and wondered if anybody was well versed in what might be good to watch, or if there are any teams in their regular or play off stage of the season? We are also open to watching any college sport as well.

Thank you for your help!

It's exciting that you're heading to Chicago in May! The city has a lot to offer in terms of sports, so you'll definitely find something to enjoy. Here's what you can expect during your stay from May 1st to May 4th:

  • Chicago Cubs - MLB Baseball: The Chicago Cubs are in full swing during May, and their season is well underway. They play at Wrigley Field, one of the oldest and most iconic baseball stadiums in the U.S. If you're into baseball, catching a Cubs game could be a great option. They often have games during this time, and the atmosphere at Wrigley is fantastic. Tickets can sell out quickly, so it's a good idea to check the schedule and book in advance.
  • Chicago White Sox - MLB Baseball: If you're not able to get tickets to a Cubs game, the Chicago White Sox, the city's other Major League Baseball team, will also be playing. Their stadium, Guaranteed Rate Field, is a bit further south of the city, but still easily accessible by public transport or rideshare. Depending on the schedule, you may find a White Sox game that fits into your plans.
  • Chicago Bulls - NBA Playoffs: The Chicago Bulls are likely to be in the middle of the NBA playoffs during your visit. If the team is still in the postseason, attending a playoff game at the United Center would be an incredible experience. The energy in the stadium is electric, especially for a playoff game, so keep an eye on the schedule to see if their games line up with your visit.
  • Chicago Blackhawks - NHL Playoffs: If you're a hockey fan, the Chicago Blackhawks could also be in the NHL playoffs around this time. Depending on the schedule, you might be able to catch a high-stakes game at the United Center. Chicago has a passionate hockey fanbase, and playoff hockey is one of the most intense sports experiences you can have.
  • Chicago Fire - MLS Soccer: The Chicago Fire, the city's Major League Soccer team, will be in season during your visit. They often play at Soldier Field, which is a beautiful stadium located along Lake Michigan. If you're looking for a soccer match, the Fire could be a fun, less crowded option compared to the big league sports.
  • College Sports: College sports are also big in the U.S., and there may be some NCAA games happening in and around Chicago. The University of Chicago, Northwestern University, and DePaul University all have sports teams, and you might find some interesting college basketball, soccer, or baseball games. College sports tickets tend to be affordable, and the atmosphere is often relaxed and fun.

To summarize, here are your options:

  • Cubs or White Sox baseball games
  • Bulls or Blackhawks playoff games (if they're still in the playoffs)
  • Chicago Fire soccer game
  • Potential college sports games

Chicago is a sports-loving city, so no matter what you choose, you'll likely have a fantastic time. Be sure to check the exact schedules for those dates as they can shift depending on team performance. Enjoy your trip and the game!
