Chinatown?

Coming to Chicago for a quick weekend. Searched info here on Chinatown and it’s not particularly positive but the reviews are several years old. Is it worth a visit? Any recommended restaurants? We lived in SF Bay Area and recently moved to Midwest and have been missing our great Asian food, were hoping to get something decent in Chicago. And if the Asian food isn’t that great, what would you recommend for a good “Chicago” experience (I realize I’m a bit all over the board here, trying to get my head around this last minute weekend)

Chicago’s Chinatown is definitely worth a visit, especially if you enjoy exploring cultural neighborhoods and sampling authentic Asian cuisine. The area is compact, walkable, and offers a mix of restaurants, bakeries, and shops. While it may not have the scale or variety of San Francisco or New York, many visitors still find it charming and worthwhile for a few hours.

Recommended things to do in Chinatown:

  • Walk through the Pagoda-style entrance and explore the main streets, including Wentworth Avenue and Cermak Road, where most shops and restaurants are concentrated.
  • Visit the Chinatown Square Mall for boutique stores, Asian groceries, and cultural displays.
  • Check out the Nine Dragon Wall, a replica of the famous one in Beijing, which makes a great photo stop.

Recommended restaurants for authentic Asian cuisine:

  • Sun Wah BBQ: Famous for roast duck and Cantonese BBQ meats. Popular, so go early or expect a short wait.
  • Qing Xiang Yuan Dumplings: Excellent handmade dumplings and noodle dishes; highly rated by locals.
  • Triple Crown Bakery: Great for fresh buns, pastries, and quick snacks.
  • Joy Yee Noodle: Fusion Asian food with bubble tea and sushi options; casual and colorful.

If you’re craving a broader “Chicago” experience beyond Asian food, consider:

  • Walking along Millennium Park and seeing the Cloud Gate (“The Bean”) sculpture.
  • Exploring the Art Institute of Chicago for world-class art collections.
  • Taking an architecture river cruise—an iconic way to see the city skyline and learn about its famous buildings.
  • Trying a classic Chicago deep-dish pizza at Lou Malnati’s, Giordano’s, or Pequod’s for the full experience.
  • Strolling down the Magnificent Mile for shopping and city energy.

Even with a quick weekend, a half-day in Chinatown combined with a few iconic Chicago experiences will give you a satisfying mix of culture, food, and city highlights.
